Outgoings
Lucas Torreira (Galatasaray A.S. €6m), Bernd Leno (Fulham FC, €3.6m), Konstantinos Mavropanos (VfB Stuttgart, €3.2m), Mattéo Guendouzi (Olympique Marseille, €11m), Alexandre Lacazette (Olympique Lyon, free transfer), Héctor Bellerín, (FC Barcelona, free transfer), Auston Trusty (Birmingham, loan), Nuno Tavares, (Olympique Marseille, loan), Pablo Marí, (AC Monza, loan), Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson, (Alanyaspor, loan), Nicolas Pépé, (OGC Nice, loan), Ainsley Maitland-Niles (Southampton FC, loan).
After many seasons of fans wanting the ‘deadwood’ out of the club, a total of 11 players went out the exit door, five of which are out permanently. That is quite the list. Frankly, it needed to happen, and Mikel Arteta and Edu got it done.
Some supporters are understandably not happy that Arsenal couldn’t sign a midfielder on the final day of the window as they tried hard for Douglas Luiz and never made a move for Youri Tielemans. However, if we have learned one thing about Mikel Arteta it’s that we shouldn’t second guess him in the transfer market.
Many fringe players were sent out on loan, and the club recouped fees for Torreira, Leno, Guendouzi, and Mavropanos, so the squad and wage bill have been trimmed down.
Many argue that this needed to happen, and rightly so. Arteta is getting rid of the players he doesn’t want, and it seems, from the outside at least, that the club isn’t concerned with what they get in return. They just want them out.
So, the outgoings were significant this summer, and it puts the club in a better position in the following windows to add players where they feel they are needed.

midfielder or winger they desperately needed</a>.</p>
<p>I am a glass-half-full kind of person looking at the players that Arsenal brought in and the ones that left, and there can only be one consensus: It was a superb window for the Gunners.</p>
<h2>How do we assess Arsenal’s summer transfer window?</h2>

<p>Is it enough to challenge for the Premier League title? Even the most battle-hardened supporter will say not quite, but our qualitative improvement is distinct and that’s been on full display at the start of the 2022/23 season with the Gunners sitting at the top of the table with a 100% record.</p>
<p>So, let’s dive into Arsenal’s summer transfer window.</p>
<h2>Incomings</h2>
<p><strong>Gabriel Jesus (€52.2m), <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/09/02/how-do-we-assess-arsenal-summer-transfer-window/2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/07/19/arsenal-new-boy-fabio-vieira-reveals-favourite-position/">Fabio Vieira</a> (€35m), Marquinhos (€3.50m), Oleksander Zinchenko (€35m), <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/09/02/how-do-we-assess-arsenal-summer-transfer-window/2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/06/27/what-will-matt-turner-bring-to-arsenal/">Matt Turner</a> (€6.36m), and William Saliba (returned from loan).</strong></p>
<p>At the beginning of the summer, everyone knew that significant investment was needed—a new striker and another left-back to cover for Kieran Tierney, who has had his injury problems.</p>
<p>Gabriel Jesus and Oleksander Zinchenko have hit the ground running. Both have transformed how the team plays with a significant emphasis on the high press that we have seen them execute to perfection this season.</p>

<p>William Saliba has easily been the best defender in the squad, and it’s not even close. While not a new signing per se, he feels like a new arrival and has rapidly <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/09/02/how-do-we-assess-arsenal-summer-transfer-window/2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/08/06/william-saliba-sensational-debut-win-crystal-palace/">established himself in the team.</a></p>
<p>We are yet to see Fabio Vieira in action as he had some injury troubles in the summer, while Marquinhos has impressed for the Under-21s and was on the bench for Arsenal’s clash with Aston Villa on Wednesday. The same can be said for Matt Turner, who will likely be seen in cup competitions and the Europa League.</p>
<p>Looking at the incomings, they have been nothing short of sensational.</p>

<h2>Overall thoughts</h2>
<p>No one should be unhappy with the business the club did this summer. They strengthened all the areas they needed (midfielder aside), and the first team got seriously better. Then the outgoings were perhaps just as significant.</p>

<p lang="en" dir="ltr">Well, that brings a mad transfer window to a close. Not the way I hoped Arsenal would finish it, but full of excitement for the season ahead. Thanks also to everyone who sent me nice messages this summer, esp as Twitter can be relentless. It’s very appreciated.</p>

<p>The deadwood was trimmed and left the squad similarly to January last year. The only knock is a lack of midfield options, so we have to pray that players do not get injured throughout the season.</p>

<p>But overall, the window gets a <strong>9/10 grade</strong> as the club did everything it needed to do aside from grabbing a midfielder.</p><!—pageview_candidate—>">
