2. Cash-in on Folarin Balogun
While Tierney’s exit seemed likely this summer, Balogun’s appeared inevitable. It became clear in pre-season that the striker wasn’t going to get the first team opportunities he desired in north London, and Arsenal have since been working on a permanent exit.
Following his stellar season in Ligue 1 with Reims last time out, the Gunners have understandably slapped a big price tag on Balogun’s head, but this has so far proved problematic when negotiating with interested parties.
The Gunners’ resolve has seen several clubs drop out of the running, but many are still interested in signing the 22-year-old before the deadline. Chelsea, Fulham, and Crystal Palace have all been linked, as were both Milan clubs, but AS Monaco currently seems to be his most likely destination.
Arsenal will undoubtedly sell Balogun before the end of the window, but I suspect it’ll be for less than their reported £50m valuation, especially if Monaco win the race.

1. Make a Kieran Tierney decision

Heading into the summer window, many expected the club to part ways with Tierney given that he was a disposable asset who could’ve garnered a healthy fee. Oleksandr Zinchenko’s arrival greatly reduced Tierney’s importance last season, and he’s far too good a player to be playing second fiddle.

Thus, a move away seemed sensible for all parties.

However, despite interest from Newcastle and overseas, the Scot hasn’t yet looked close to leaving the club. While he featured throughout the club’s pre-season, he hasn’t been included in either matchday squad to start the Premier League campaign.

Tierney’s omissions would suggest the club are working on a transfer, but where is he going to go? Newcastle are surely out of the running after signing Lewis Hall, and it’s unlikely that anyone from overseas would be willing to match Arsenal’s valuation.

The latest reports have linked Tierney with a loan move, but I don’t see any point in that. Arsenal might as well keep him on their books for greater depth after Timber’s injury.

3. Stay in the hunt for an attacker

Arsenal are going to have to sell before they can buy again after their massive outlay this summer, but if the Gunners can shift a couple quickly, they might return to the market for another attacker.

Mikel Arteta is well stocked in forward areas, with the Gunners currently blessed with a group of players capable of performing multiple functions in the manager’s framework. Leandro Trossard, for example, can play across the frontline, while Gabriel Jesus is comfortable operating out wide.

However, I still have concerns about the depth behind Bukayo Saka. The winger’s brilliance means Arteta is going to use him whenever he can given that Reiss Nelson is the only senior option behind him – other than Trossard.

Overall, the situation hasn’t changed since last season when Saka started 37 of 38 Premier League games. Arteta will continue to relentlessly use the club’s star boy, and his workload is only going to increase as a result of the club’s return to the Champions League.

Finding a quality depth option in the final week of the window will be tough, but it’s necessary if Saka isn’t <a title="Are we seeing another Bukayo Saka end-of-season slump?" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2023/08/24/4-transfer-priorities-arsenal-end-summer-window/2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2023/05/14/bukayo-saka-end-of-season-slump/" rel="">going to burn out.

4. Chop the deadwood

Arsenal have so far garnered less than £40m for the sales of Granit Xhaka, Matt Turner, Aaron Trusty and Pablo Mari, while Marquinhos and Alex Runarsson have been loaned out. There’s work to be done.

The likes of Nicolas Pepe and Nuno Tavares remain on the club’s books, as does Albert Sambi Lokonga, who’ll find it tough to earn any first-team minutes in north London this season. Rob Holding is another who could depart, as could Cedric, although I understand the Gunners being cautious over his exit given their lack of depth down the right-hand side of their defence.

While Lokonga is expected to leave on loan, Arsenal are struggling to find buyers for Pepe, Tavares, and Holding. Nottingham Forest have withdrawn their <a title="Arsenal Transfers: Gunners trying to offload Nuno Tavares to Premier League club" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2023/08/24/4-transfer-priorities-arsenal-end-summer-window/2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2023/08/17/arsenal-trying-offload-nuno-tavares-premier-league-club/" rel="">interest in Tavares, but there is reportedly interest in Pepe from Saudi Arabia. While some have called for Pepe’s reintegration, it’s clear that Arteta does not trust the Ivorian.

Arsenal have to let the former Lille winger depart this summer, even if it’s for a minute fee. Just get him off the books. The club can manage retaining Holding and Cedric, but Pepe is too big of a financial burden given his output. I wouldn’t be against another loan for Tavares, but a permanent sale would be ideal.
<!—pageview_candidate—>">
