In what comes as one of Arsenal’s biggest challenges of the season so far, the Gunners travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday in a bid to stay top of the Premier League.
While Mikel Arteta’s side have found recent fortunes at Chelsea’s home, it has been a long time coming. Arsenal have won their previous two Premier League matches at the Bridge; courtesy of a lone Emile Smith Rowe goal in 2021, and an Eddie Nketiah double accompanied by Bukayo Saka and Smith Rowe strike strikes in the 4-2 win last season.
However, the build-up to this match has set a different precedent: Arsenal head in as favourites.
3 key battles that could decide Sunday’s clash against Chelsea
With the World Cup just around the corner, Arteta will be hoping for a statement away win against a top six club to propel Arsenal into the top spot. To ensure this, the Spaniard will have recognised the key on-field battles that will take place. Here are the top three that may be key to the outcome of this match.
Battle #1: Gabriel Martinelli vs Cesar Azpilicueta
So far, the Brazilian winger has terrorised full-backs this season. No matter the opponent, Martinelli has found joy in beating his man with his electrifying pace and strength on the ball. The injury to Reece James means that Azpilicueta is likely to start on Sunday in a back four.
Despite the 33-year-old being a veteran of the Premier League, Martinelli will show no respect for the Spaniard on Sunday, as this is certainly an area that Arteta will be hoping to exploit.
If he is played on Sunday, Kieran Tierney could hold just as much of an impact on this as Martinelli. The Scot’s overlapping runs have been consistent within the Europa League this season, as shown in Thursday’s performance against FC Zurich. An overlapping overload on this side of the pitch, one which Takehiro Tomiyasu may not be able to provide, is likely to cause Azpilicueta defensive issues.

Battle #2: William Saliba vs Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Arsene Wenger’s last gift to the Emirates faithful returns to face his former club in a match that could destroy any relationship the pair had left. Since being excluded from Arsenal’s squads and securing his move to Barcelona in January, Aubameyang has caused off-pitch controversy with leaked videos where he made comments about his former manager Arteta.

This is his time to truly announce himself to the Chelsea fans, but he has one major problem stopping him: William Saliba.

The 21-year-old has been sensational for Arsenal this season. Whether it be his calmness on the ball or his physical dominance, Saliba has revamped the Arsenal defence. This comes as one of his bigger tests. Aubameyang will be up for the match and the Gabonese’s explosive pace may cause trouble for the French international; but if there is one player that the Arsenal fans will want to stop, it’s Aubameyang: it’s Saliba’s job to do this.

Battle #3 Thomas Partey vs Mateo Kovacic

Both managers will undoubtedly want to impose themselves in this match, and control within the midfield may just be the way to do this. Partey has become a crucial part of Arsenal’s success this season, and this isn’t just to do with the goals he’s finally scoring.

The Ghanaian sets the tempo for the north London club. When he is given space on the ball, either Gabriel Jesus, Granit Xhaka or Martin Odegaard is able to find and occupy pockets between the lines that they previously couldn’t. This is demonstrated perfectly in Reiss Nelson’s first goal against Nottingham Forest. After Partey picked the ball up following a Forest attack, the space that he was in meant that Xhaka could make a darting run through the Forest defence and play the ball back to Jesus, who found Nelson.

But while this looks like a simple manoeuvre from the league leaders, it was all due to the space that Partey was given, something which Kovacic will be tasked with stopping. The 28-year-old was absent from Graham Potter’s starting line-up against Dinamo Zagreb in the midweek Champions League fixture, but there will be hope that he can be fit for Sunday.
<!—pageview_candidate—>">
