4. Movement off the ball
A quick scroll down Twitter is all that is needed to view the greatest frustration of Arsenal fans after the match. Granit Xhaka, Matteo Guendouzi, Joe Willock and others have come under fire for the lack of progression of their passing, choosing conservative options instead of pushing the ball forwards and into more advanced areas of the pitch.
While these players must take their share of the responsibility, there is also a wider problem that should be acknowledged: the movement off the ball was non-existent, the speed of the overall play was far too slow, and there were very limited options to play forwards into, thus forcing the backwards, sideways and overall conservative passing.
Guendouzi and Xhaka controlled the game quite nicely in midfield, especially for much of the first half and in parts of the second, but they lacked purpose in their passing because there were limited opportunities to play with such. Arsenal played backwards too often, but the cause of it is far deeper than just the players playing the passes.
Arsenal will ever enjoy, but as they fly back to London, they will sit back and be most content with the result, if not the performance. Mikel Arteta’s side showed grit, character, resilience and heart <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/02/20/arsenal-vs-olympiakos-5-things-learned-job-done/2/"https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/51533308">to squeeze out a 1-0 victory against a formidable Olympiakos. Alexandre Lacazette scored late on in one of the few fluid attacking moves of the match, and the Gunners defended stoutly to take the away-goal lead back to the Emirates.

5. Why no Ainsley Maitland-Niles?

Arsenal struggled down the right flank throughout. This was especially troubling in the early stages as Mathieu Valbuena ran <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/02/20/arsenal-vs-olympiakos-5-things-learned-job-done/2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=sokratis%22>Sokratis ragged. In fairness to Sokratis, he is no right-back and the agility and balance of Valbuena was always going to cause him strife. Had Mikel Arteta been forced to play Sokratis at right-back with no other options, such problems would have been acceptable, but with <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/02/20/arsenal-vs-olympiakos-5-things-learned-job-done/2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=ainsley+maitland-niles%22>Ainsley Maitland-Niles on the bench, Arteta had a perfectly capable player to start in Sokratis’ stead.

Maitland-Niles flourished at right-back when Arteta first came to the club and it seemed as though he was set to challenge Hector Bellerin for the starting berth, even if he still viewed himself as a central midfielder. But once Bellerin proved his fitness and was ushered into the starting XI, Maitland-Niles has nowhere to be seen, even missing out on the squad entirely in last weekend’s win over Newcastle United.

If Arteta felt the need to rest Bellerin, which is quite understandable given the Spaniards’ near return from an ACL tear, why not play Maitland-Niles at right-back, not Sokratis? It makes very little sense. Something, it seems, is going on here.

3. Mikel Arteta made mistakes

This was one of the worst performances under<a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/02/20/arsenal-vs-olympiakos-5-things-learned-job-done/2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=mikel+arteta%22> Mikel Arteta. The Arsenal head coach has not made many mistakes in his two months at the club, but his team selection and overall approach here was one.

It started with using Sokratis at right-back. Even if Arteta did not trust Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Shkodran Mustafi would have been a much more capable selection with Sokratis moving into his better-suited centre-back position. But the primary issues stemmed in the offensive positions.

Joe Willock struggled to link play throughout as the number 10. Dani Ceballos then came on, someone who excels at knitting together position, but Willock remained on the pitch, Gabriel Martinelli withdrawn instead. And then there was the use of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was noticeably distressed at being shunted out to the right flank.

In a 0-0 against Burnley, Arteta attempted to use Martinelli, Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette in a front three. It didn’t work. He did the same here and the same imbalances once again cost the team attacking fluency and threat. Arsenal won the game, yes, but the decisions of their manager are worthy of criticism.

2. A great result

For all of the bemoaning of the performance, by the time the 90 minutes were up, Arsenal were heading home with a crucial victory, a one-goal lead to take back to the Emirates and protect in the second leg, and that vital away goal which is so significant in two-legged European ties.

The result is even more impressive when you consider the opposition. Olympiakos had not lost in 18 games and had only been defeated once at home all season, and that was by Bayern Munich in the group stage of the Champions League. This was no easy ride, and Mikel Arteta’s conservative approach illustrated as much.

Arsenal rode their luck at times, defended dutifully throughout, relied on Bernd Leno to produce some key saves, and could have scored had they been more clinical on the counter-attack. This was not the best performance, no, but it was a huge victory nonetheless.

1. A good defence

Few expected Arsenal’s defence to be the focus of Mikel Arteta’s early work. But two months into his reign at the club, if there is one area of the team that he has improved the most, it is the defence, especially the compactness and structure of the team.

The Gunners kept their third clean sheet in a row on Thursday night. That is the first time since April 2019 that they have done so. The high press is effective, the midfield is stout and strong, and the distances between the individual players and collective units are close and consistent, making the team very difficult to play through and break down.

At the heart of it are two revitalised centre-backs: <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/02/20/arsenal-vs-olympiakos-5-things-learned-job-done/2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=shkodran+mustafi%22>Shkodran Mustafi and<a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/02/20/arsenal-vs-olympiakos-5-things-learned-job-done/2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=david+luiz%22> David Luiz started all three of those matches as a centre-half partnership. It is clear that Arteta wants continuity at the position, but he is also being rewarded with excellent performances. Both Luiz and Mustafi were very good again here.
