4. Nicolas Pepe is well on his way
It hasn’t been a smooth sail for Nicolas Pepe since Arsenal broke their transfer record for him. Granted, coming over from Ligue 1 is definitely proving to be a difficult transition for just about anyone and everyone who attempts it. Hell, Alexandre Lacazette is still trying to figure it out.
More from Pain in the Arsenal
But against Sheffield United, we saw Nicolas Pepe in the midst of a flourish. When we first signed him, there were a lot of loose touches. He was trying to do too much. He was trying to change the world and prove himself and win us a title. All with one touch.
Against Sheffield, he was much more within himself. He had composure, he understood situations, but when the time came for him to try something, to make something happen, he did it. He lit a spark.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better example of his pace and acceleration than we saw here. He was burning past defenders and making it look easy. He created the most obvious chances and was unlucky not to get away without an assist.
He’s getting better. And better. And better. And it’s something to be excited about.
On to No. 3.
Arsenal knew this one wouldn’t be easy, but they also know what three points here would do to their standing in the Premier League table—a whole lot. Last time these two faced each other, a win for the Gunners would have put them in third. Now we were just hoping to move into the upper half. (And above Tottenham.)

There were only three changes made, all by necessity. Gabriel Martinelli came on for the suspended <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/18/arsenal-sheffield-united-5-things/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/d5dd5f1f/Pierre-Emerick-Aubameyang?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/18/arsenal-sheffield-united-5-things/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/bc7dc64d/Bukayo-Saka?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Bukayo Saka came on for the ravaged leftback corps. And *gulp* <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/18/arsenal-sheffield-united-5-things/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/3f2d59fe/Shkodran-Mustafi?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Shkodran Mustafi came on for an unwell Sokratis.

The Gunners snuck the first lead of the match, notching a rather fortuitous goal off a deflected cross just before half via Gabriel Martinelli, who had struggled to finish on two previous chances.

Of course, Sheffield had to claw one back, because why would the Gunners ever be able to see out a lead to the end?

Another 1-1 draw, and we have some positives and negatives to talk about in our five things learned. Let’s start with No. 5.

5. Please sell Mustafi

Supposedly, there’s a renewed interest in keeping hold of Mustafi. Today was yet another glaring indication of what he is. He is a competent defender for about 85 minutes, but the risk of individual error puts us in perpetual danger.

That happened yet again. We can’t keep waiting for him to change. He isn’t going to change. I don’t care what you get for him. He’s a liability. No matter what glimpses of promise we see out of him. the risk is always going to be there.

This isn’t even a lessen learned, but maybe it’s something <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/18/arsenal-sheffield-united-5-things/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/d934d1e6/Mikel-Arteta?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Mikel Arteta needs to learn. I get that this time, Sokratis was sick, but I saw <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/18/arsenal-sheffield-united-5-things/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/d79a8c87/Rob-Holding?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Rob Holding. I doubt Rob Holding could have done any worse. And at least there’s upside to Holding. Not so with Mustafi.

On to No. 4. Let’s try to spin positive.

3. Are we truly unlucky?

When Gabriel Martinelli turned home that goal just before half, I remarked how lucky we were. After so many missed chances, after Sheffield dominated the entire half, Arsenal managed about eight good minutes and they got a fortuitous deflection that Martinelli couldn’t help but turn home.

It was lucky. We were lucky. And that’s not a word I usually associate with this club. Just look at the “If VAR had gotten it right” table. We are unlucky. I don’t say that to deflect attention from our deficiencies. I say that because we are legitimately unlucky.

Then the second half happened. A second half that we dominated. We should have found a second goal. Nicolas Pepe had a legitimate shout for penalty. And just like every other match, we blew the one-goal lead in the 82nd minute and had to settle for a draw.

Was the draw deserved? Absolutely. Hard to say we earned any more than that. But seriously, what does it take to get a lucky break that’s substantial enough to earn us a better result every so often? Is it really too much to ask?

Onwards to No. 2.

2. Pay attention to Bukayo Saka

In the early phases of the game, I did not feel confident in Bukayo Saka at leftback. Perhaps it was just pre-established insecurities, knowing that he was only there because <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/18/arsenal-sheffield-united-5-things/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/3935e52e/Sead-Kolasinac?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Sead Kolasinac and <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/18/arsenal-sheffield-united-5-things/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/fce2302c/Kieran-Tierney?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Kieran Tierney were both hurt. Add in that he is a winger, not a left back. I think the concerns were justified.

But about midway through the match it dawned on me that Saka was doing quite well. Not perfect, of course, well.

Sheffield found very little joy on his side of the pitch. Most of what they found came on the opposite side. Meanwhile, Saka was one of our most influential players going forward up the pitch and his delivery was simply delectable.

This has been the case since Saka has been deputizing at leftback. He hasn’t been perfect. But he’s shown more and more signs that he is an incredibly capable player that’s full of surprises. It’s not unlike <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/18/arsenal-sheffield-united-5-things/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/e3a5814e/Ainsley-Maitland-Niles?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Ainsley Maitland-Niles, though I hope that Saka doesn’t get relegated to a life as a fill-in fullback.

1. Is the magic wearing off?

When Mikel Arteta first arrived, we felt that jolt of enthusiasm and belief. Players looked brand new. Old guys looked inspired and the team looked to be headed in the right direction. We saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang defending, <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/18/arsenal-sheffield-united-5-things/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/16380240/Mesut-Ozil?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Mesut Ozil fighting and Nicolas Pepe really coming into his own.

Against Sheffield United, we saw Alexandre Lacazette continue to falter, Mesut Ozil continue to fade, and Nicolas Pepe continuing on the same path he’s been on for some time.

I wouldn’t call the match uninspired, but it was definitely not the same Mikel Arteta magic that characterized his early matches. It felt dulled by comparison. The belief didn’t look as strong and the confidence just wasn’t there. Not across the board.

My worry is that these veteran players have sunk back into their frustrations. <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/18/arsenal-sheffield-united-5-things/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/c0e27d1a/David-Luiz?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">David Luiz is still crushing it, but the attacking veterans are looking like their same bedraggled selves all over again.
