ROB HOLDING
CB, Arsenal6.3
This was a big match for Holding, being just the second match he’d started in 18-months due to injury and/or general exclusion. He played the needed part with composure and intelligence. What little rust he had didn’t haunt the team. Hard done to be slightly at fault for Brighton’s first goal. He held his own despite it.

SHKODRAN MUSTAFI
CB, Arsenal6.0
Caught in two worlds on that last goal. He had to make a decision and rather than making a conclusive decision, he instead made two half-decisions. Up until that point, I had been quite impressed with his performance, and even with it, I do think he had a decent match. It was just a last-minute indecision that undid an otherwise positive showing. But isn’t that always the case with Mustafi?
Arsenal looked paltry and emasculated against Manchester City and <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-player-ratings-3/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/d934d1e6/Mikel-Arteta?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Mikel Arteta took it as a sign to make changes against Brighton. Rather than stick with the same side, he rotated <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-player-ratings-3/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/9dbb75ca/Alexandre-Lacazette?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Alexandre Lacazette and <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-player-ratings-3/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/57e3f0c7/Nicolas-Pepe?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nicolas Pepe into the attack in favor of <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-player-ratings-3/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/a3b03921/Joe-Willock?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Joe Willock and <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-player-ratings-3/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/a53649b7/Eddie-Nketiah?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Eddie Nketiah and <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-player-ratings-3/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/bc7dc64d/Bukayo-Saka?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Bukayo Saka kept his spot in the team, but was moved into a midfield role.

Go figure, he did quite well with it.

While I don’t think either Nketiah or Willock should see this as a demotion, the changes took place right away. The Gunners just looked better from the start. Pepe and Lacazette were involved in the attack combining well with the resources they always rely on.

Arsenal needed to answer back, but instead, they gave in

It was all red and white early. The Gunners attack thrived, with Saka putting in the most dangerous threat, smashing the crossbar in the 8th minute with a tremendous curled effort.

Of course, things went sour before long. Not necessarily in the scoreline, but in the health department. <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-player-ratings-3/2/"https://fbref.com/en/players/2628fd2b/Bernd-Leno?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Bernd Leno suffered what looked to be a season-ending injury thanks to some dirty play by Maupay. The German keeper, and our player of the season, was stretchered off, taking time to scold Maupay on his way off.

The score went into half level at nils. It didn’t stay that way. While the Gunners attack started to flatline deeper into the second half, in the 68th minute Nicolas Pepe stepped up and did his usual thing—individual inspiration. A beautifully curled effort gave the Gunners a 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately, it didn’t stay long, as Brighton answered back in the 75th minute. And just when you thought we’d only get one point from this match, we went and got zero.

Here are those player ratings:
