Arsenal disastrous lost to Brighton on Saturday afternoon, all but ending their Champions League hopes. Despite the loss, however, there were some positives. Here are three.

It was an awful defeat. After losing 3-0 to Manchester City in a confirming loss that showed just how far behind Arsenal are at present, they then proceeded to produce the quintessential Gunners defeat: an added-time capitulation against a team that has not won a single match in 2020. Brighton and Hove Albion will be ecstatic with the three points, of course, but it was Arsenal who threw this game away.

Predictably, the reaction has been hugely negative. However, there were some positives to take from the 2-1 loss. In fact, here are three.

3. Nicolas Pepe responded

After providing a goal and three assists in his final three league matches before lockdown, hopes were high for Nicolas Pepe’s final stages of the season. Then he not only sat on the bench for Arsenal’s loss to City; he didn’t even come off the bench, Arteta turning to young Reiss Nelson midway through the second half instead.

However, on this occasion, Pepe was handed the starting role on the right wing. And he responded to Arteta’s challenge, which came with stark words in the week:

“It’s clear that his consistency has not been at the level he can produce. He’s the first to accept that. That’s what I’m going to demand of a player of his level and calibre <…> He’s one of the players in the squad that can do it and must take the responsibility.”

Pepe was dangerous in the first half, skinning Dan Burn on several occasions whenever he was isolated against the Brighton defender. And then he produced the crucial moment of offensive quality, firing a lovely finish into the far corner from just inside the penalty area. He responded to Arteta’s challenge.

Arsenal played well for an hour

The Mikel Arteta project is more important than the points. Yes, it would be nice if Arsenal won and closed the gap to the top five teams, but in reality, Champions League qualification is already beyond this team. What is more significant is building the foundations of a team. And for an hour, there were positive signs.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

<a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-3-positives-disastrous-defeat/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2023/11/10/arsenal-interest-miguel-gutierrez-girona/"> Fabrizio Romano confirms Arsenal interest in Girona star

<a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-3-positives-disastrous-defeat/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2023/11/10/when-will-martin-odegaard-return-from-his-injury/"> When will Martin Odegaard return from his injury?

<a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-3-positives-disastrous-defeat/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2023/11/10/2-midfielders-arsenal-could-sign-in-january-transfer-window/"> 2 midfielders Arsenal could sign in January transfer window

<a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-3-positives-disastrous-defeat/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2023/11/10/thomas-partey-unlikely-to-play-for-arsenal-again-in-2023/"> Thomas Partey unlikely to play for Arsenal again in 2023

<a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-3-positives-disastrous-defeat/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2023/11/10/predicted-arsenal-lineup-vs-burnley-saka-fit-to-start/"> Predicted Arsenal lineup vs Burnley: Saka fit to start?

Hector Bellerin looks sharp again at right-back, Matteo Guendouzi was close to his best in a holding midfield role that could be his long-term home in the team, while Rob Holding settled into the defence well enough, even with a few nervy moments here and there.

For much of the first half, Arsenal looked sharp. They moved the ball quickly, accurately, created several chances, and largely controlled play. Even in the early stages of the second half, they remained well on top of Brighton and more than deserved the lead when Pepe curled home a beauty.

It was only in the final 15 minutes that they capitulated, lacking the necessary fight and desire to grind out the victory. But while that is concerning and is something Arteta must address, the overall performance is much more important for the long-term success of the project. And Arsenal’s performance, for the most part, was decent.

<a class="next-slide-btn" style="background: #c01f2f" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-slide-shortcode" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-3-positives-disastrous-defeat/"#"> Next: 1. Bukayo Saka is sensational

Not many individual players played close to their highest level. There weren’t many horrible performances, but few reached what they are capable of. In fact, in the first half especially, there was one player who stood head and shoulders above everyone else: 18-year-old <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-3-positives-disastrous-defeat/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=arsenal%22>Bukayo Saka.

Playing an a wide-left central-midfield role, Saka was brilliant. He carried the ball, created chances, cracked the crossbar with a curling right-footed effort from the edge of the penalty area, helped recycle possession throughout, and was calm and composed on the ball. He played like a veteran central midfielder, yet was playing in a position that is almost entirely unfamiliar to him.

Arsenal do have to sort out his contract, and given the current trajectory of the club, you would not blame him if he wanted to see who else is interested in him. Reports of Liverpool being a potential landing spot would surely see Saka strongly consider his other options.

<a class="story-link-next-btn" style="background: #c01f2f" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="story-link-next-shortcode" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-3-positives-disastrous-defeat/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/06/20/arsenal-vs-brighton-5-things-learned-kidding/"> Next: Arsenal Vs Brighton: 5 things we learned

Nevertheless, he is a special talent and Arteta seems keen to build the team around him. If nothing else, that is exciting for the future.
<!—pageview_candidate—>">
