3. Defending still a major issue
When Mikel Arteta arrived at Arsenal, one of the first positive impacts he enacted in the team was a greater defensive solidity, structure and efficacy. From the improved intensity and organisation of the pressing to the higher defensive line, Arteta went about fixing many of Arsenal’s long-lasting defensive vulnerabilities.
More from Pain in the Arsenal
But while the initial bump was indeed a positive one, since then, those same old defensive shortcomings have come back to bite. And on Saturday, the Gunners looked far from comfortable when trying to deal with a West Ham United side that is above the relegation zone on goal difference alone.
Michail Antonio was a particular issue. His pace and physicality on the counter-attack caused Pablo Mari especially all sorts of problems. Dani Ceballos and Granit Xhaka played several misplaced passes in midfield to put their team in a vulnerable position in transition, while Eddie Nketiah’s hold-up play was poor and the high-press lost that same intensity of previous performances. All these issues contributed to West Ham’s offensive threat.
And then you add in the increasingly hapless set-piece defending, with zonal marking that lacks individuals to attack the ball or blockers to prevent opposing players running onto the ball and clear communication and organisation to ensure that every threat is accounted for, and it is easy to see why this current Arsenal team are struggling defensively.
Arsenal%e2%80%99s performance against West Ham United on Saturday afternoon certainly was not their best showing under new head coach Mikel Arteta. In fact, it might have been their worst. But by hook or by crook, they got the job done and eased their way past the Hammers thanks to a late Alexandre Lacazette strike which keeps their Champions League hopes alive amid a tight race for a top-five finish.

5. Central midfield problematic

In recent weeks, Mikel Arteta has seemingly settled on his starting central midfield pair: <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/03/07/arsenal-vs-west-ham-united-5-things-learned-champions-league-hopes-alive/3/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=granit+xhaka%22>Granit Xhaka as a slanted left-sided option who often slips into a left-back area, and <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/03/07/arsenal-vs-west-ham-united-5-things-learned-champions-league-hopes-alive/3/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=dani+ceballos%22>Dani Ceballos, the deep-lying conductor tasked with controlling play from deep while also instigating attacks with probing, progressive passes. On Saturday, this combination was a major weakness of the team.

The distribution of both was poor, neither eclipsing a 90% pass accuracy rate. They were both guilty of poor passes straight to West Ham players that immediately made Arsenal vulnerable in transition. Neither was willing to push the envelope and play more testing passes into the final third, while Xhaka especially lacked quality in the final third when given opportunities to create.

And all this comes with the added caveat that starting both is a defensive liability. They are slow, not natural defenders, and can be painfully exploited on the counter-attack, as West Ham did to great effect. While the Xhaka-Ceballos pivot may be the best option that Arteta currently has available to him, it is a problematic set-up overall and one that must be solved come the summer.

4. Bernd Leno saves bacon

There were a rising number of questions surrounding the value and impact of <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/03/07/arsenal-vs-west-ham-united-5-things-learned-champions-league-hopes-alive/3/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=bernd+leno%22>Bernd Leno in recent weeks. He made a couple of errors, started to lose command of his penalty area, something which was an issue for him during his first season at the club, and also struggled to play confidently and with composure with the ball at his feet.

On this occasion, however, he was excellent, and he saved Arsenal’s bacon on several occasions — that, you may recall, is not the first time he has done that. There was one moment of confusion with David Luiz when he should have communicated clearly and collected a loose ball, and his play in possession is still problematic, too eager to boot the ball down the field and commit a turnover, but his goalkeeping was superb.

He sprung to thwart Sebastien Haller in the first half, made several superb saves against Michail Antonio, including one reaction sprawl to claw clear a close-range header in the second half, and he commanded his penalty area well from set-pieces, punching clear when under pressure with authority and distance. Leno was at his best here, and if he wasn’t, Arsenal would not have won.

2. The Lacazette effect

During his goal drought and underwhelming run of general form, there has been a growing portion of the Arsenal fanbase that has come to heavily criticise <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/03/07/arsenal-vs-west-ham-united-5-things-learned-champions-league-hopes-alive/3/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=alexandre+lacazette%22>Alexandre Lacazette’s every performance. As Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang bangs home goal after goal, his great friend is left behind, and many supporters look past the dirty work the Frenchman does in their analysis of his value to the team.

However, if you wanted the perfect illustration of just what Lacazette provides as the lone centre-forward, this was it. Superb hold-up play, pinpoint passing, including one lovely ball into Mesut Ozil who should have done better to get a shot on goal, strength to repel the attempted dominance of central defenders, and an eye for goal, assuredly planting home a simple finish on the volley, his third goal in his last four games.

In comparison to Eddie Nketiah, whose touch was poor and lacked the strength to hold off the West Ham defenders, Lacazette’s impact was clear to see. This is why he is so integral to Mikel Arteta’s system as the lone centre-forward, and it is why Arsenal would be wise to be patient as he looks to rediscover his Player of the Season form from last year.

1. Champions League hopes alive… just

After humiliation in the Europa League last week, Arsenal head coach<a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/03/07/arsenal-vs-west-ham-united-5-things-learned-champions-league-hopes-alive/3/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=mikel+arteta%22> Mikel Arteta has just one chance to kickstart his era with the crucial finance-bumping qualification for next season’s Champions League: finish in the top five of the Premier League. After Saturday’s narrow victory, that chance is still alive… just.

Arsenal did not deserve to beat West Ham. In fact, you could argue that they conceded the better chances and would have been entirely fortunate to come away with even a draw. But got the win they did, and it now puts them in a position to claw their way back into the Champions League race.

They have now moved to within five points of Chelsea in fifth, three points of Wolves in fourth, two points of Man. Utd in sixth and level on points with Tottenham. As of writing, Chelsea, Man. Utd and Spurs all have to play this weekend. Any dropped points will see the Gunners make precious ground on their rivals, while Wolves only drew with Brighton. Sheffield United, meanwhile, beat Norwich City and should be discounted from the race.

All in all, it leaves the situation as murky as can be. Any predictions are futile and there are many ways the cookie can crumble between now and the end of the year. Nevertheless, Arsenal are in the race, and just a few weeks ago, even that looked out of reach.
<!—pageview_candidate—>
">
