Come July, Arsenal’s midfield will be an unholy mess. With a host of players guaranteed to leave, and a few more vying for an exit, we will have to find replacements before next season. Here are some long-term replacements which would set our squad up for a brilliant future under Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal’s midfield is in an odd place at the moment. We have a trio which works very well together: an in-form Lucas Torreira screening the back four, partnered by a Granit Xhaka who has looked mobile and almost sprightly under the tutelage of Mikel Arteta, completed by a rejuvenated Mesut Özil, who is playing the best football of his Arsenal career. However, this midfield trio will absolutely not last past the end of the season.
Granit Xhaka has already confirmed terms with Hertha Berlin, to the tune of around $25 million. He will stay until the end of the season, but likely no longer. Mesut Özil, a mercurial figure, is the wrong side of thirty, and has been the subject of a rumored move to Besitkas for years now, a move that looks more and more likely to succeed at the end of the season.
Lucas Torreira has been repeatedly linked with a move back to Italy, with Milan the primary benefactor. While I think it unlikely that the move will go through, having a plan to replace him is not a bad idea.
And those are just the starters. Dani Ceballos returns to Real Madrid at the end of the season, and for most of his Arsenal tenure, journalists have had a tug-of-war over whether he wants to make the Arsenal move permanent, or never come back again. Ainsley Maitland-Niles may have found a permanent home at right back.
Emile Smith-Rowe and Joe Willock have shown flashes of brilliance, but are mostly undeveloped, and need more time. Matteo Guendouzi has links to PSG, and will likely attract attention from big clubs as his journey to the top continues. He was a finalist for the Golden Boy award, and will continue to grow and improve the more he plays.
Let’s take this player by player, starting with the Uruguayan.

Lucas Torreira

Lucas Torreira is the least likely to leave out of our current starters, and as a result I have only lined up one potential replacement for him. <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/07/arsenal-replacements-midfield/"https://fbref.com/en/players/881cd6be/Florentino-Luis">Florentino Luis, a 20-year old defensive midfielder from Portugal, is currently plying his trade at Benfica.

The press has payed much attention to his teammate Gedson Fernandes, who has apparently attracted interest from Manchester United, but the key to Benfica’s success this year has been Florentino.

An excellent screen of the back four, he has been instrumental at breaking up play, and instigating counter attacks for the pace of Rafa Silva and Pizzi. He averages 3.5 tackles and 4.3 inerceptions per game, a mind-blowing statistic.

A long-ball specialist, he has featured prominently in Benfica’s Champion’s League campaign. With the recent addition of Julian Weigl, Benfica may have a reduced need for Florentino, and he would be a wonderful signing, even if not to replace Torreira.

Moving on to the next.

Granit Xhaka

Granit Xhaka is almost guaranteed to leave at the end of the season, with a move already on the cards, and as a result will need replacing. He is key to both our play in possession and our counter attacks, and as a result I have lined up two potential replacements for him. The first is a player who has been repeatedly linked to Arsenal, in <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/07/arsenal-replacements-midfield/"https://fbref.com/en/players/529f49ab/Thomas-Partey">Thomas Partey of Atletico Madrid. The 26-year-old is one of the most complete midfielders in the world, with his prodigious engine and defensive talent matched by skill in possession, a complete range of passing, and a penchant for a worldie from forty yards.

<a class="story-link-related-btn" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="story-link-related-shortcode" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/07/arsenal-replacements-midfield/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/04/arsenal-jerome-boateng-happy-solution/"> Related Story: Arsenal: Jerome Boateng a happy, temporary solution to everything

A midfield combination of Partey and Torreira is fearful indeed; the Ghanaian is aggressive and tenacious. He is very good at winning the ball back, and very difficult to dispossess. He has become progressively more disciplined under Diego Simeone, and would fit well into the base of Arteta’s midfield. Like Xhaka, he has a penchant for a yellow card, although he tends to get bookings as a result of his overpowering physicality, as opposed to lack of athleticism.

The other potential replacement is one which Arsenal have already purportedly asked about: <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/07/arsenal-replacements-midfield/"https://fbref.com/en/players/384d58d9/Denis-Zakaria">Denis Zakaria. Arsenal were reportedly considering a swap move for Zakaria and Xhaka, and the comparison is rather apt. Aside from the coincidence of club and country in common, the Swiss international from Borussia Monchengladbach has much in common with Granit Xhaka: standing at 6’2,” he is a long rangy runner, and a bulldozer at the base of the midfield.

He is effective in possession, is very secure with the ball at his feet, and despite his height, is a smooth and confident dribbler. He is particularly talented at breaking the press with the ball at his feet, a skill showcased heavily in Gladbach’s successes in the Bundesliga this season. At 23, he has room to grow and improve, and would be a valuable addition to the Arsenal midfield. He is also an apt replacement for Matteo Guendouzi, should the Frenchman move on.

Loanee coming up next.

Dani Ceballos

Dani Ceballos’ departure is inevitable, as he will return to Real Madrid at the end of this season, and should he not choose to stay, there are two men who should replace him. The first of those is Leicester City’s <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/07/arsenal-replacements-midfield/"https://fbref.com/en/players/56f7a928/Youri-Tielemans">Youri Tielemans.

The Belgian has impressed under Brendan Rodgers, and was key in Monaco’s title-winning season in 2016/17. Still only 22, he is the creative hub of a Leicester side sitting in second. With three goals and four assists to his name this year, he may not appear to have the best track record this season, but like Ceballos he thrives in possession, and excels at making space and providing chances for his teammates.

He plays 1.4 key passes per match, for a total of 24 on the season, and loses possession less than once a game. He is also very effective in the high-pressing system employed by Rodgers at Leicester.

<iframe loading="lazy" width="500" height="281" src=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/07/arsenal-replacements-midfield/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/KTntFbYs1is?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen>

He is a player of remarkable quality and composure, and at just 22, he has already proven himself ready for the rigors of the Premier League, especially in the center of the midfield, the most trying position. He is similar to Thomas Partey, in that he is a very well-rounded midfielder.

He is slowly establishing himself as one of the best passers in the league, and it is difficult to overlook his defensive contributions. He is not as tricky as Ceballos, but is certainly less flighty. He would also be a good replacement for Guendouzi. His sole drawback would be a hefty price tag; Leicester purchased him for upwards of 40 million, and <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/07/arsenal-replacements-midfield/"https://www.transfermarkt.com/youri-tielemans/profil/spieler/249565">Transfermarkt values him at 62 million, which is likely less than what Leicester will ask.

The second player—and the one who I am truly hoping we sign—is <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/07/arsenal-replacements-midfield/"https://fbref.com/en/players/a5db0bec/Houssem-Aouar">Houssem Aouar of Lyon. The 21-year-old Frenchman had links to Arsenal over the summer for prices as high as 90 million. I think his price is more around 40-50 million, which is more than enough for the skill he brings for the table. The diminutive midfielder—he stands around 5’8’’—is silky smooth on the ball, and best on the half turn, very similar to Ceballos. He is also clinical in the final third, with 4 goals to his name this season. He averages 1 key pass per game, completes 2.6 dribbles, and draws 1.9 fouls per game on average.

His play almost resembles <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/07/arsenal-replacements-midfield/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=santi+cazorla%22>Santi Cazorla in his prime; he excels when he receives the ball with his back to defenders, and is able to turn past them into space, which he does routinely. He plays best at center midfield, but has deployed as a number 10 and wide left for Lyon this season, with marked success throughout. Much of his play style involves layoffs and quick one-twos throughout the midfield and attacking thirds, making him ideal for Arteta’s system. He’s an incredible talent, and we would be lucky to have him.

Finally, the spotlight.

<a class="next-slide-btn" style="background: #c01f2f" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-slide-shortcode" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/07/arsenal-replacements-midfield/"#"> Next: Mesut Ozil

The other player, and the player who I am pinning my hopes on for the 20/21 season, is <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/07/arsenal-replacements-midfield/"https://fbref.com/en/players/934e1968/Dominik-Szoboszlai">Dominik Szoboszlai of RB Salzburg. He has been seemingly overlooked with the recent sales of Braut Erling Haaland and Takumi Minamino, but I believe he is the most talented of the bunch, and the one who could impact the Arsenal squad the most. Szoboszlai is an incredible talent, his unique combination of height, skill, and power makes for a rather unique set of traits for a central attacking midfielder.

He is the driving creative force behind RB Salzburg’s attack this season. He has been far more prolific in goals than in assists, but he’s averaging .64 goal contributions every 90 minutes over his last two seasons, a strike rate most prolific European forwards would dream about. Here’s what Bleacher Report’s <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/07/arsenal-replacements-midfield/"https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2853828-br-football-ranks-10-breakout-candidates-in-the-2019-20-champions-league">Sam Tighe had to say about Szoboszlai:

“There are certain players out there, rare players, who have a truly spellbinding technique when they strike the ball. Dominik Szoboszlai is one of them.

It doesn’t matter where he picks the ball up on the pitch. He needs just a second to look up and pick out a run, executing surgical, precise passes that curve and whip their way around defenders.

He employs a similar striking technique on set pieces, quickly carving himself out as Salzburg’s go-to guy from dead-ball situations. He’s also assumed the mantle for his national side, Hungary, this month, netting his first from 20 yards.

Szoboszlai can pick up some steam while carrying the ball, too, using an imposing 6’1″ frame to his advantage, but he’d much rather beat you with his brain, not his brawn.”

There aren’t many resume’s more incredible than that. At a mere 19 year of age, he is a proven Champion’s League and international talent, and there is literally zero reason Arsenal should not pick him up. He is one of the most exciting and dynamic attacking midfielders in the world, and with a market value of 17 million per <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/01/07/arsenal-replacements-midfield/"https://www.transfermarkt.us/dominik-szoboszlai/profil/spieler/451276">Transfetmarkt, would be a complete and utter steal to boot. He is the ideal replacement for Mesut Ozil, despite the prowess of Smith-Rowe, and would complete an already excellent Arsenal midfield.

Arsenal fans spend much of their time bemoaning the defensive issues the club is undergoing at the moment, and rightly so; our backline is a mess. But we need to start focusing further up the pitch.

Midfield control is the name of the game in modern football, and the only way Arsenal will be able to achieve all Arteta wants out of them is to inject new blood into the squad. I believe that any of these potential signings could revolutionize the Arsenal midfield, and that we should not pass up the chance for any of them.
<!—pageview_candidate—>
">
