Arsenal v Everton: Player Ratings

Had a very good game today, coming out to clear danger the Gabriel-Koscielny partnership created at times. Made a tremendous save off a close range Lukaku shot, and saved and held another with the Belgian lurking.

Controlled his flank well. Gave the ball away needlessly sometimes, but displayed great reading of play down his side to win it back with timely interceptions.

Gabriel giveth and Gabriel taketh away. Brutal error in the opening minutes nearly gifted Everton a lead, but made a couple game changing tackles in dangerous areas, one of which led to Arsenal’s first goal.

Should be lauded for managing a new partnership with Gabriel well. Picked up an intelligent yellow with a professional foul as Everton had a numbers advantage.

Saw another opportunity in the side after his start against Monaco which came as a bit of a surprise. Drove to the end line well on multiple occasions, but no teammate could get on the end of his crosses.

Completed only 80% of his passes, but most of the mistakes came in the opponent’s half where he spent more time than usual. Nose was bashed in by Olivier Giroud, and Arsenal may be in a pinch if he needs time on the sidelines. Possibility an injury to Coquelin will return Wilshere to the side.

Arsenal’s skipper on the day was very good, retaining possession well after some early hiccups. Developing a tendency to drop very deep and spark moves himself, which takes some pressure off Coquelin to distribute in a congested midfield.

Looked rough in the opening stages like most of the squad and suffered from suspect crossing, but as the match wore on, his value increases. The marauding runs at the defense take a remarkable toll, and when he got past a defender or two, collapsed the compact formation Everton were using to deny Arsenal space.

MAN OF THE MATCH – Ozil’s Monaco hiccup seems to have subsided as he drifted around the pitch, influencing the attack with his control and vision. Completed 91% of his passes and created five chances, assisting both Arsenal goals.

Completed an unusually high percentage of his passes, but it seems like frustration may be seeping in. Was guilty of turning the ball over trying to dribble out of trouble, and doesn’t quite have the teeth Arsenal are used to in the final third.

Wenger had no choice but to start him today. Can’t get back on the horse if you’re not at the track. His goal was a really excellent finish on his weak foot, but should have had two more.

Came on very late. Didn’t do much.

Came on for Coquelin after his nose was demolished. Contributed adequately to shore up the defense.

Arsenal becomes very counter-attacky when Rosicky plays and it’s not a bad thing at all. His tame shot at goal was deflected past Howard, but it’s a goal nonetheless. Good on him.
