Arsenal beat Bayern Munich. Again. That is something that is pretty cool. With their backs against the wall in the toughest competition in club football and a ton of momentum on their side, Arsenal displayed a degree of grit and resolve that we could have never dreamed of. Even with how well the team had been playing, Bayern Munich is a different level of excellence. Arsenal took that level of excellence, wadded it up, and tossed it back to Germany.
And now, life goes on.
Arsenal face Everton next. The Toffees were grossly exposed by Manchester United last Premier League matchday to the tune of three-nil. It was not pretty and the entire known world is keen to the fact that Everton is better than that. Surely they will be looking to reinforce that point when Arsenal welcome them to their midst.
But Everton will be running face first into arguably the most in-form team in Europe. Bayern Munich is the best team in the world and Arsenal handled them. By those standards, Everton should pose very little threat. But this is Arsenal and nothing can be written off.
As mentioned, Everton is still a team of great quality. Between Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley, they have the ability to create and hammer in goals. They have done it to Arsenal in the past.
But unlike Arsenal in the past, this Arsenal has Petr Cech and they have a new-found dignity that looks sustainable this time around. With momentum still hugely in the Gunner’s favor and another home game on the cards, Arsenal are the heavy favorites.
All that being said and considered, let’s get into our predicted starting XI.

is out with his hamstring injury. That being said, Alexis Sanchez is bound to be a bit exhausted still, as he was running on fumes against Bayern Munich.

If you can stop Robert Lewandowski, you can stop anyone. Petr Cech was just another fantastic piece of Arsenal’s puzzle against Bayern Munich. He made an unreal save on a free Lewandowski to keep the score level and give Arsenal the opportunity to seize the moment and pull three points.

Which they did.

Petr Cech is one of the best in the world at every aspect of goal keeping. It is going to take something really special from Everton to get past the Czech wall.

The composure that Hector Bellerin displays is stupid. It is absolutely stupid. The kid is 20 years old and he is breezing past wingers and full backs alike. Once past, he has the mental fortitude to control the ball and create chances. Bayern Munich tried to exploit him and they were left gasping for air. Aside from one skillful move by Douglas Costa, the German Giants found out firsthand that Hector Bellerin is a force to be reckoned with.

Nacho Monreal is probably the most underrated defender in Europe. He is quietly magnificent. The left back is not even on the Spanish National side, yet he holds down the left side of the Arsenal defense with the deftness of a center back. Which is probably because he used to play center back. Thanks, Arsene Wenger!

Per Mertesacker has been absolutely rock solid lately. For him to shut down Manchester United and Bayern Munich alike lends tremendous credit to his ability to still be a starting center back at the highest level of competition. That being said, the big German is getting older and with a very athletic front line like Everton has, I would not be surprised to see Mertesacker get a break so as to let Gabriel Paulista back in the action. That may be a stretch though, as the winning formula has been established.

Although it may be forgotten by now, Gabriel Paulista was in fantastic form as well until the illness struck him and kept him out against Watford. He will be raring to get back, as the internal competition along the back line is heating up.

Laurent Koscielny will start too. Nothing crazy here. As long as he is healthy, he will be nowhere near that bench.

The fact that Francis Coquelin’s contributions have started to pass by rather quietly is actually a sign of how quality he is. It’s no longer shocking that he can shut down even the best attacks in the world in the middle of the pitch. That is just what Le Coq does. He did it again against Bayern Munich but few out there were singing his praises. That is a compliment.

Santi Cazorla was looking sprightly as ever against the Germans. I’m beginning to think that he has discovered some rare dietary technique that causes him to never age. That would be fine with me. The little Spaniard is looking impressive as always.

Nobody needs a break more than Alexis Sanchez. Unfortunately, no one can be afforded a break less than Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean was clearly on fumes against Bayern Munich, but that did not stop him from over-exerting himself in an effort to single-handedly down the greatest team in the world.

In the end, it was not needed, as his team mates came to life around him and lifted the team to glory. It will be another short break. But Alexis will start. Arsene Wenger does not sit his prized signing.

And in the other corner will be Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The energetic young winger has not had the season we expected but with Aaron Ramsey out indefinitely, he may find his path paved in gold. This team is clicking behind Mesut Ozil and the Ox will give Ozil a whole new dimension to exert his play.

I strongly believe that Olivier Giroud should be starting. But he won’t. Arsene Wenger is a fan of the winning formula and he will not change it. Theo Walcott was not able to do much against Bayern Munich, while Giroud was. Walcott has to be aware that Giroud holds a lot of Wenger’s favor and that the internal competition is always abuzz.

Everton will likely open up enough to give Walcott some room to run in behind. From there, Ozil’s telekinesis will kick in and all Walcott will have to do is finish. That is the big question though. Can Walcott finish consistently?

And then there is Mesut Ozil. Leave it to the German maestro to go from ‘the invisible man’ to having his talent so strongly recognized that it becomes a laughing matter. It is literally hilarious how good Mesut Ozil is. I pegged Bayern Munich as a huge test for Mesut Ozil. He passed. He passed with flying colors. Everton will be child’s play for him.
