With Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney in the starting XI, a case could be made for Arsenal being the third-best team in the Premier League last season.
But, their respective injury woes meant that the solid but distinctly unspectacular Cedric Soares and the awfully raw Nuno Tavares emerged as protagonists for Mikel’s Gunners down the stretch.
Arsenal were a far cry from their most scintillating iteration when either Tomiyasu or Tierney were missing, and their stuttering form to conclude the campaign highlighted the need for further reinforcements at full-back.
The club are said to be content with their options at right-back heading into the summer, but Tavares’ potential loan move away should mean we see a new left-back drafted in. A player capable off both flanks and adept off both feet would be ideal, but such specialist profiles are rare – even during a time where ‘positions’ have been reduced to mere functions.
4 full-backs Arsenal should target this summer
Nevertheless, the club does have a few options. So, without further ado, here are four full-backs Arsenal should target this summer.
Aaron Hickey

Following a quiet debut season at the Renato Dall’Ara, Aaron Hickey emerged as one of Serie A’s standout young stars in 2021/22.
The Bologna wing-back scored five times in the league, as Sinisa Mihajlovic made the most of the teenager’s versatility. Hickey lined up down the left 30 times and six times off the right last season.
His ambipedality has undoubtedly caught the eye of Arteta and Arsenal are said to be keen on signing the Scottish international in a €25m deal this summer. He may well be the club’s first signing of the transfer window.
There’s a lot to like about Hickey, including his technical security under pressure, contribution to the build-up phase, smart off the ball movement and shooting threat from distance with both feet. Although, his crossing has come under some scrutiny. The Scot’s 0.29 completed crosses per 90 minutes last season ranked 150th in Serie A.
Despite some stylistic disparities, Hickey could develop into Arsenal’s answer to Ivan Perisic, who recently completed a move to those folk down the road.

<p>Destiny Udogie was an unknown commodity to even the most fervent of calcio lovers this time last year, but his productive end to the 2021/22 season with Udinese means that many now regard him as Italy’s most exciting young full-back.</p>
<p>Udogie operated at left wing-back for both Luca Gotti and Gabriele Coffi last season with his production soaring under the latter during the final stretch of the campaign. Seven of his eight Serie A goal contributions arrived between Matchdays 27 and 38.</p>

<p>The young Italian is distinctly dynamic and he has the potential to develop into an attacking powerhouse from left-back. However, he must develop the defensive side of his game, while he wasn’t an active contributor in Udinese’s build-up last season.</p>
<p>Admittedly, there are some similarities to Nuno Tavares, but Udogie’s ceiling is undoubtedly higher. The 19-year-old is already on the fringes of Roberto Mancini’s Azzurri.</p>
<p>I’d love to see Arteta get his hands on the teenager because there’s scope for him to develop into a star.</p>

<p>There are several intriguing options from the Premier League. <strong>Marc Cucurella</strong> enjoyed a brilliant season with Brighton and is already on Manchester City’s radar, while Crystal Palace’s <strong>Tyrick Mitchell</strong> is trending towards a big-money move away from Selhurst Park.</p>
<p>Southampton, meanwhile, are blessed with a full-back tandem that the vast majority of the top-flight would love to possess. Young <strong>Tino Livramento</strong> is a possibility the Gunners must explore once he returns from his long-term injury, but <strong>Kyle Walker-Peters</strong> is a player the club should be looking at right now.</p>
<p>His Lilywhite ties, though, render a deal unlikely.</p>

<p>Nevertheless, Walker-Peters is a two-footed star down both flanks. While primarily a right-back, he’s made 32 appearances at left-back throughout his career, <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/06/07/4-full-backs-arsenal-target-summer/"https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kyle-walker-peters/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/341051" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per transfermarkt.com</a>, including 23 last season.</p>
<p>The England international has had success against Arsenal in the past, and he did a fine job on Bukayo Saka at St Mary’s in April. He’s ever-maturing defensively, and his slight frame hasn’t been an issue at the highest level. Overall, Walker-Peters is arguably the archetypal Arteta full-back.</p>

<p>TWENTY-EIGHT (28) assists since the start of the 2020/21 season. David Raum is a relentless supplier of goals.</p>
<p>Following a superb campaign with Greuther Furth in the German second tier last season, Baum moved to Hoffenheim last summer before notching 13 Bundesliga assists in his debut campaign.</p>
<p>The 24-year-old’s meteoric rise has seen him thrust to the forefront of Hansi Flick’s plans with the national team, and another move away could beckon for him ahead of the 2022/23 season. Raum can operate as part of a four- or five-man defence down the left-hand side, but he’s undoubtedly more productive when given the licence to maraud into the final third.</p>
<p>His preference to play as a wing-back might deter the Gunners – who haven’t regularly used wing-backs since the end of Arteta’s first season as manager – from making a move. But <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/06/07/4-full-backs-arsenal-target-summer/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/06/06/william-saliba-returning-arsenal-play-3-back/">William Saliba’s return means we could see Mikel become even more flexible with his configurations</a>.</p>
<p>Thus, Raum could be a brilliant option for the Gunners. The German must now be regarded as one of the best attacking full-backs on the continent, and he could add another dimension to Arsenal’s play in the final third.</p>

<p>However, there are some concerns over his defending. Raum’s technique in one-vs-one situations often leaves a lot to be desired, while his overzealousness in the defensive phase can get him into trouble at times.</p><!—pageview_candidate—>">
