2. Atalanta
Possibly the best chance to play and improve on his defensive abilities. We all know Italian football is where the defence can reign supreme, and given Tavares’ defensive woes, a move to Atalanta would prove very fruitful.
Finishing eighth in Serie A last year, with no recognised left-back on the squad as Giuseppe Pezzella’s loan deal with the club expires in June, sending him back to Juventus, a potential starting spot has opened up after Robin Gosens signed for Inter in January.
Atalanta, Europe’s supreme entertainers not so long ago, were Serie A’s fifth highest-scoring side last season, and adding a left-back who loves to get forward at will, could prove to be a rather juicy weapon. Defensively is where the improvement needs to come, and it would surely help Tavares being in a league that prioritises defense – even if he’ll likely function as an aggressive wing-back in Gian Piero Gasperini’s system.
It could be a decent move for the 22-year-old as he looks to become a regular starter and improve on the many elements of his game.

There have been so many rumours and reports of players coming in, but next to none of players leaving the Emirates. Until now. With Arsenal thought to be strongly interested in versatile Ajax <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/06/24/nuno-tavares-potential-destinations-ranked/2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/06/18/3-reasons-lisandro-martinez-perfect-signing-arsenal/">defender Lisandro Martinez, the immediate future of Nuno Tavares is unclear.

Nuno Tavares’ potential destinations – ranked

Over the last couple of days, <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2022/06/24/nuno-tavares-potential-destinations-ranked/2/"https://twitter.com/LucaBendoni/status/1540033774414508032" target="_blank" rel="noopener">various reports have said that three clubs in Marseille, Atalanta, and Real Sociedad have all made inquiries for the 22-year-old. So, out of those three teams, which would present the best option for Tavares?

3. Real Sociedad

The Spanish side would be an okay situation for Tavares to walk into. The club finished sixth in La Liga last season.

Diego Rico and Aihen Muñoz shared left-back duties as former Gunner Nacho Monreal was injured. The Spanish style could suit Tavares as his desire to get forward would be well utilised with the likes of Alexander Isak and David Silva feeding of his impressing forays forward.

As Real Sociedad finished sixth, defensively, they were really good. Only three teams conceded fewer goals in La Liga last season. Having a great defensive setup for Tavares to learn off would be superb for his development.

A potential caveat, though, will be his game time – or lack thereof. With Rico and Muñoz the preferred pair, could the Portuguese full-back be the starter over the duo? As we know, game time is important for any young player and this won’t be guaranteed if he was to arrive in San Sebastian.

1. Marseille

The logical choice for Tavares. A move to the French side is a no-brainer. We have seen both William Saliba and Matteo Guendouzi enjoy fruitful spells with Marseille in recent years.

On top of that, Marseille are in the Champions League, which gives Tavares a chance to get ahead of some of his Arsenal peers. Already a good defensive team, Marseille conceded just 38 goals last campaign, the third-best in the league.

Having that kind of defensive setup would be the perfect place to hone his skills. Whether that great defensive record was down Saliba or not is another thing as he returns to north London, but it is impressive, nonetheless.

He would also link up with former Gunner Sead Kolasinac, meaning that his integration into the squad should be pretty seamless.

The French league has been a great place for previous Arsenal youngsters to ply their trade and come back better, more well-rounded players. We all knew that Tavares was a bit raw when the club signed him, and we saw that several times last season, too.
