Arsenal travelled to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the first leg of the semi-final of the Carabao Cup. Here are five things we learned from the 0-0 draw.
Arsenal battled their way to another Stamford Bridge 0-0 draw. At the stadium that Jose Mourinho made his name, the ‘Specialist in Failure’ very much modelled his side on his adversary’s infamous bus-parking tactics. Arsene Wenger clearly implemented a defence-first strategy and, for the most part, it worked. There were inevitable moments of good fortune. But Arsenal were able to repel the increasingly pressurising waves of Chelsea attacks, and now look forward to a return leg at the Emirates where Wembley is very much in sight.
Here are five things we learned from the intriguing, if not exciting, 0-0 draw.

5. The plucky defence turns up
Thanks to injuries to Nacho Monreal and Laurent Koscielny, Wenger was forced to rely on his young defenders once more. Shkodran Mustafi, as always, anchored the defence, flanked by Calum Chambers and Rob Holding, the latter of which had had a torrid time chasing after Ben Brereton for 90 minutes on Sunday.
More from Pain in the Arsenal
Collectively and individually, the trio were excellent. They combined for five interceptions, four tackles, eight blocks, and a massive 20 clearances. Chelsea, who had 54.4% of the possession and controlled the game for long periods, certainly tried to pile the pressure on Arsenal. This was a backs-to-the-wall job, and the Gunners’ back-three did it wonderfully.
I would like to single out Holding for special praise. Irrespective of his recent struggles, which culminated against Nottingham Forest, Holding was excellent. He made a number of key blocks from wide crosses, he guarded the near-post bravely when Victor Moses was able to beat Ainsley Maitland-Niles, and his reading of the game seemed to aide his lack of mobility, even against the shimmying and the shaking of a player like Eden Hazard. All three were very good, which is somewhat of a surprise.

4. Please don’t be too bad Jack

<a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2018/01/10/arsenal-vs-chelsea-5-things-learned-excellent-result-troubling-developments/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=jack+wilshere%22>Jack Wilshere was starting his seventh successive game. In the other six, that stretched throughout the festive period, he had played 90 minutes in all of them. In an interview last week, he revealed that because of a new diet and stricter training regime, he is feeling fitter than ever, growing in confidence with what has been an extremely frail body. This was seemingly the time for him to simply enjoy his football. Or not, as the gods have deemed.

Midway through the second-half, Wilshere jumped to close down Danny Drinkwater’s whipped-in cross. The ball struck his ankle and, after a few moments of hobbling, he eventually fell to his haunches, asking for treatment from the sidelines. He was later substituted. Wenger, after the game, revealed that he had suffered an ankle sprain and is a doubt for Sunday’s game against Bournemouth.

Wilshere, up until that point, had been playing wonderfully. Two successful dribbles, dispossessed only once, a lovely clipped through pass for Alexandre Lacazette, and a 93% pass completion rate. Only two other Arsenal players were over 85%. But, as they have done throughout his career, injuries came back to bite at just the crucial moment. Let’s hope it’s not too bad. Unfortunately, we have been here before with Wilshere and his ankles.

3. Alexandre Lacazette’s shooting-boots are lost

I have written previously that I was not concerned with <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2018/01/10/arsenal-vs-chelsea-5-things-learned-excellent-result-troubling-developments/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=alexandre+lacazette%22>Alexandre Lacazette’s goal-drought. He was playing well, he was getting chances, and while his lack of net rippling was not ideal, it was not an issue that I would get too hung up on. I may have been a little premature.

Predicted Arsenal lineup vs Burnley: Saka fit to start?

Lacazette has now gone eight games without a goal. In those eight games, he has played a total of 554 minutes, which is equivalent to 6.16 full games. Moreover, Arsenal have scored more than one just three times and have now failed to score in two of them. This is becoming a worrying trend.

Additionally, Lacazette was a key reason as to why Arsenal blanked most recently. After springing the offside trap beautifully with a perfectly-timed, bent run, Lacazette had time to set himself before firing a bouncing ball, which came from a lovely lofted through pass by Jack Wilshere, towards the goal. He didn’t. He lashed at it and, subsequently, saw his shot skew into the ground to raucous, ridiculing applause. It was not pretty.

For confidence’s sake, Lacazette needs to find a goal. Anything will do. Off his knee, off his bum, off his hand, as long as it is allowed. It doesn’t matter. He needs a goal because, at the moment, he looks like a striker who hasn’t scored in eight games.

2. Is this it for Alexis Sanchez?

With Mesut Ozil absent with a knee injury and Wenger ostensibly insistent on starting his strongest possible line-up, as he was right to be, it seemed obvious that <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2018/01/10/arsenal-vs-chelsea-5-things-learned-excellent-result-troubling-developments/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=alexis+sanchez%22>Alexis Sanchez would start as a member of Arsenal’s front three. The spark that he and Ozil provide has been central to the attacking potency that the Gunners have enjoyed in many games this season. Losing both when one is available seems a little backwards. And yet, that is exactly what happened.

Now, it is pure speculation as to why Sanchez didn’t start. Only Wenger, Sanchez, and perhaps a few of the players and coaches only truly know. It’s highly likely that Wenger wanted to start him given that he fielded all his other Premier League stars. And he was fit enough to make the bench and then come on with nearly half an hour to play. So it is a little peculiar that he did not start.

The immediate and most obvious reason is the growing rumour that Sanchez will leave this January. Manchester City are pushing hard for his signature; Arsenal have touted Malcom as a possible replacement. All the pieces fit the jigsaw and this is another corner piece being laid on the table. It remains to be seen if Sanchez will stay at the Emirates for the remainder of his contract. But conventional wisdom suggests not. This could well be the beginning of the end.

1. The Carabao Cup is now a priority

Rarely has <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2018/01/10/arsenal-vs-chelsea-5-things-learned-excellent-result-troubling-developments/"https://paininthearsenal.com/?s=arsene+wenger%22>Arsene Wenger played his strongest team in the Carabao Cup, formerly the League Cup. He has always valued the FA Cup, the league, and the European tournaments ahead of the midweek knockout competition. But given the current context of results, this was very different.

With Arsenal already out of the FA Cup thanks to their third-round, 4-2 loss to Forest at the weekend, the best chance of a trophy this season came in Wenger’s least-liked competition. Win one double-legged semi-final and you’re at Wembley. That is the thinking and Wenger prescribed to it.

Other than Alexis Sanchez, who was perhaps resigned to the bench because of exceptional reasons, Wenger played his strongest possible team. There were many injuries to contend with — Mesut Ozil was a late omission with a knee problem, and so this looked like a weakened Arsenal side. But with the options that were available to him, Wenger threw every resource he had at this game. It paid off.
