15. Frank Stapleton
Frank Stapleton starts off our top 15. His longevity with the club alone was enough to merit serious consideration, as he began his career at Arsenal and stayed with the club from 1974-1981, at which point he moved to Manchester United (boo, hiss).
Stapleton made 300 career appearances for Arsenal in that time span, leading the team in goals for three straight years and, sharing yet another similarity with Joe Baker, formed a fantastic partnership with Malcolm MacDonald.
Stapleton was instrumental to the Gunners FA Cup successes, leading them to three separate finals, including a victory over Manchester United, the team he would later join.
In the end, he tallied 108 Arsenal goals in his 300 appearances, giving him membership to that prestigious 100 goals club.
Let’s get moving. Onward to No. 14.
Arsenal’s 30 Greatest Players Ever

If you add up all of Arsenal’s strikers who have scored at least 100 goals, you get 2,313 goals. That’s a lot of goals, and that only comes from the best of the best, the 17 scorers to hit that century mark.

Therefore it goes without saying that given their diverse history and their copious goal total, whittling it down to the top 15 is no easy task and it has to come down to more than just goals scored. You may find people on this list ranked higher than someone who scored more goals.

The way we ranked them was by averaging rankings. Andy and myself ranked our top 15 and averaged out our positions to form a consensus top 15. For the most part, we included the same names, just maybe in different positions. But there were two strikers who didn’t make it onto the list that were included in our individual lists, and they will begin our countdown in the honorable mentions.

Also, as a disclaimer, Alexis Sanchez has not made the list. He’s only just become a striker.

Anyway, we will get started with my honorable mention first, and I can’t imagine I am going to make many friends with this.

Honorable Mention: Olivier Giroud

I can hear the collective booing and hissing. But you all have Andy to thank for keeping him out of the top 15. Personally, I put him at 13th. I’m not making this any easier on myself, am I?

But here’s my logic. Olivier Giroud came into the Gunners squad at a time where they didn’t have much of a supporting cast. Everyone blamed him and said he was the reason the Gunners couldn’t win a title, but I think it was the opposite. I think he had a huge part to play in ensuring that the Gunners stayed in Champions League positions at a time where they probably shouldn’t have.

Giroud will never get the credit he deserves, but I hope that history will be kind to him. He’s had his howlers, just like anyone else, but his passion, dedication and improvement make me unquestionably put him in the top 15. Not to mention the fact that his goals record stands up to a lot of the greats out there and he will be the 18th Arsenal player to score 100 goals.

He also brought home two FA Cups for the Gunners.

Moving on, we get to Andy’s honorable mention.

Honorable Mention: Joe Baker

Andy had Joe Baker ranking in at 10th on his list, which puts him higher on the honorable mentions charts than my man, Olivier Giroud. The Liverpool native was at Arsenal from 1962-1966. But while he didn’t spend as much time at Arsenal as some of the greats on this list, he made the most of the time he had.

In those four years, three of them had Baker as the club’s top scorer. Overall, he finished right at the century mark, scoring 100 goals in 156 career appearances for Arsenal, which at the time made him one of the Gunners all time greatest goal scorers.

Baker was a speed merchant, who used his pace and technical ability to dissect opposing defenses. He was even a natural header of the ball, combining masterfully with Geoff Strong to form a memorable striking partnership.

The hang up with Joe Baker is that in his time, the Gunners never finished above 7th place. It was the defense that was largely at fault for this, but the lack of bona fide results hold back Baker’s standing.

He was sold to Nottingham Forest in 1966 and was never able to return to the same form he was in while with the Gunners.

Honorable mentions are over, let’s get into those rankings!

That in and of itself is quite the feat, but Lambert didn’t stop there. Using his brutish size and strength, he continued to rack up the records. He set the record for most goals scored in a single game, scoring five in Arsenal’s 9-2 victory over Sheffield United. Although it would be broken by Ted Drake just a few years later.

He helped the Gunners win their second title in 1932-33 but by then he was not a regular player. Still, he scord 14 goals in 12 appearances, so you can’t deny him the part that he played.

Lambert spent the bulk of his footballing career at Arsenal, making 143 Premier League appearances for the club, scoring 98 goals in the process.

Lambert was one of Arsenal’s first great strikers, and he will always have a place in the conversation of the best to ever ear the red and white.

No. 13 is next.

Kanu could damn well have been in the Top 5 if he wasn’t stuck playing back up to the greatest striker to ever grace the Premier League, Thierry Henry. Henry himself <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2017/02/07/arsenal-15-all-time-greatest-strikers/3/"http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/thierry-henry-arsenal-need-three-5672725">has said that Kanu could have been a starter. the Nigerian was incredibly talented and was hampered in his numbers only in his lack of appearances.

What truly made him a cult hero was his 15 minute hat trick against Chelsea after being down 2-0. When you do that, you could do nothing else and still be in many conversations.

But Kanu did many other things. He was an Invincible, which automatically inflates anyone’s status. He was named African Player of the Year in 1999. He was voted the 13th greatest player in Arsenal history on the team’s official website. All of this points to a man who could have been so much more.

In the end, he scored 43 goals in 197 appearances, the gross majority of which were subs. That is the only reason we couldn’t put him higher up on this list. He is still an Arsenal great in his own right.

Next up, No. 12.

12. Doug Lishman

Lishman was brought on to be the back up to Reg Lewis in 1948. That back-up spot wouldn’t last long, as Lishman soon established himself as a goal scoring stallion capable of dismantling any defense. After getting through initial injuries, he emerged in the 1950-51 season as the Gunners top scorer, coming straight out of the doctors office and onto the top of the charts.

He scored 30 goals that season, including three straight hat tricks at home.

Lishman saw to it that Arsenal was always in the running for serious silverware and they took home another First Division title in the 1952-53 season. Lishman tallied 26 goals as the Gunners claimed the title on goal difference over Preston North End.

He went five straight seasons as the Gunners top scorer, finishing his career with a grand total of 137 goals in 244 appearances. A true Arsenal man, he spent a healthy majority of his time with the Gunners and will always be remembered as one of their greatest goal scorers ever.

Having to serve in the military himself, Lewis was robbed of time at Arsenal, but he spent his entire career with the club. He led the team to a First Division title in 1947-48 and an FA Cup in 1950.

Despite injuries in the latter stages of his career, wartime goals not counting and serving in the military himself, Lewis finished with 116 goals in 176 appearances when he retired at 33. Every single appearance he ever made was with the Gunners, as he had been with the club since he was a schoolboy.

You just have to wonder what he could have done with better health and without the war. Either way, Lewis is a Gunner hero and well-deserves his No. 11 spot.

Which makes us almost feel bad to put No. 10 here.

10. Robin van Persie

Going from a hero like Reg Lewis to Robin van Persie makes me feel dirty, but there is no denying just how prolific the Flying Dutchman was when he donned that Arsenal kit. He was one of Wenger’s great projects and ended up sufficiently filling the void that Thierry Henry left.

The problem with RVP was the over reliance on him. His goal tallies were astronomical, but the club, suffering from massive debts incurred from the building of the Emirates, was unable to build around him.

While he did not win any trophies with the Gunner’s, he finished with 132 career goals in 277 appearances, battling injuries through most of those seasons. It was in his final year with the club that he really hit his heights, scoring 37 in 48 appearances.

And then he left and went to Manchester United, sullying what legendary status he could have accomplished at the Emirates.

While he is not too highly thought of anymore, his abilities alone make it impossible to leave him off a list of this topic.

Anyway, let’s get off of this page and move on to the first be in the single digits.

9. Jimmy Brain

The main Brain, Jimmy scored a ton of goals for Arsenal and he did it all while competing for a spot with Jack Lambert, who has already appeared on this list. He didn’t always beat out Lambert, but he did enough to score himself a massive tally of 139 goals in 232 career appearances with the Gunners.

Like so many others on this list, Brain was the club’s top scorer for four straight seasons. This included a 39 goal 1925-26 season which was second only to Ted Drake’s 44 goal 1934-35 season.

He spent eight years with the club and used it to score himself a place in their history books as one of the best Arsenal goal scorers of all time. He won himself a Charity Shield in 1930 and while he didn’t have a huge role to play (he made just 16 appearances) he was part of the squad that won the Gunners first ever First Division title in 1930-31.

The goals speak for themselves. Brain had himself a doozy of a career, despite never featuring for England and moving to Tottenham after his stay with the Gunners.

In total, Smith lead the Gunners to two League Championships, an FA Cup, a League Cup and Arsenal’s sole European success, the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup title of 1994.

Not only did Smith lead the Gunners for four consecutive seasons in goals, but he even took home top honors in the First Division in 1988-89 with 23 goals.

Alan Smith was a Gunner through and through, making 347 appearances for the club and scoring 115 goals. Although he began his career and reached considerable heights with Leicester City, it was in the latter half of his career, the half with the Gunners, that he really reached his best.

Nowadays, you can hear the Englishman on your local Xbox or PlayStation version of FIFA 17 or through his color commentary on SkySports.

Jack was a big name signing of the day for the Gunners in 1928. He was already an established name for Bolton, drilling home a massive 144 goals in 295 appearances. Herbert Chapman used Bolton’s financial troubles to filch the talented forward, who, despite joining the likes of Jack Lambert, established himself as a seriously prolific forward.

In the end, he would 124 goals in 208 appearances for Chapman’s Arsenal, toppling the numbers that Lambert put up and working himself into the Gunner’s top 10 best goal scorers of all time. He took home two titles with the Gunners both in 1930-31 and in 1932-33.

Chapman was blessed with some amazing strikers during his time as the helmsman. While David Jack was an outstanding talent, most of the strikers that Chapman employed boasted similar abilities.

At No. 6, we are getting into some rather elite company.

6. John Radford

Radford played 481 matches with Arsenal. That in and of itself is worth a spot on numerous lists out there, but the fact that he used those 481 matches to score 149 goals and rank in as the Gunner’s fourth all time goal scorer just adds to the legend that he is.

Donning the Arsenal kit from 1964 until 1976, Radford raked in his fair share of success with the Gunners. Despite being moved to the right wing by Bertie Mee, Radford found significant success scoring goals with the first team. Yet by the time he was moved up front again, he was leading the Gunners to their first cup in 17 years with the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1970.

That success carried over into the League-FA Cup double where he used his passing ability to help augment a budding Arsenal side.

This success would be his biggest achievement, as after that, he slowly dwindled until Frank Stapleton moved into be the new front man.

Radford was a titan for the Gunners and formed a seamless partnership with Ray Kennedy to kick the club to their first successful spell in nearly two decades. Surely that is worthy of his No. 6 spot.

We’re cracking the top 5 with a man who could score in his sleep.

5. Ted Drake

We are now getting into those unanimous Arsenal strikers that should compose every similar list out there. It all starts with this man, Edward Joseph Drake.

Drake did some amazing things for the Gunners. For starters, he won two First Division Titles in 1934-35 and 1937-18 as well as the FA Cup in 1936. Throughout all these titles, he was without a doubt the Gunners most important player, as the goals simply never stopped coming.

Take for instance that one time he scored seven goals against Aston Villa, a record that still stands to this day as the most goals ever scored in a single outing.

Drake scored 44 goals in the 1934-35 title winning season, a club record that, not surprisingly, still holds to this day.

Through it all, Drake accumulated 139 goals in 184 matches for an absolutely stupid .75 goals per match. Something we just won’t see again in England any time soon.

Despite injuries and having to serve in the War, Drake will always remain as one of the best to ever don the red and white.

And then there were four. Although it must be stated that the two strikers ranking in at third and fourth were tied on our lists, so they will be joint third-places.

3. Cliff Bastin

Sharing the third place spot is Cliff Bastin, a man who won so many trophies for Arsenal that it’s almost silly. Of course, when you make 350 appearances, most of which came under Herbert Chapman during the glorious 1930s, you are bound to turn up with some impressive numbers.

Bastin won the FA Cup twice and the First Division five times, as well as scoring a whopping 178 goals in that time. It must also be noted that he didn’t always spend his time as the primary target man. Bastin had the man who came before him on this list to compete with and found plenty of time as a winger.

But that didn’t stop the goals, and they flowed in abundance.

Yet another career that was disrupted by the War, Bastin still managed to work his way into the top scoring spot with Arsenal, a record that held for nearly 60 years. It was finally broken in 1997 by the man who Bastin shares the No. 3 spot on this list with.

3. Ian Wright

Ian Wright was like the seat warmer for the Invincibles. He had already had a really strong career at Crystal Palace before he made that crucial move to Arsenal for the then-record £2.5m fee. Needless to say, that price was well worth it.

Wrighty would go on to score 185 goals in 279 appearances to become the all-time leading scorer for the Gunners. The only shame of that being it didn’t last long. However, the fact that Wright’s legacy still stands so strong even in light of the man that was to come is testament to how superb of a striker he actually was.

Forming a masterful partnership with Dennis Bergkamp, Wright quickly solidified himself as one of the best strikers to play in the English game.

Even when Arsene Wenger arrived in 1996, Wright was still a huge scorer, despite being 33. He was the second-top scorer in that first season with 23 goals and would break Bastin’s record the following season.

As far as trophies, Wright has that covered as well. The eccentric Englishman brought home a League Title, two FA Cups, a League Cup and Arsenal’s only European championship, the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup. He also led the Premier League in scoring six different seasons.

No. 2 should be just as obvious as No. 1.

2. Dennis Bergkamp

Bruce Rioch may not have lasted at Arsenal long, but he can always hang his hat on the signing of Dennis Bergkamp. It was thanks to him that this club legend existed and we are eternally grateful.

Bergkamp was a magician with the ball and what struck me the most about his talent is the way he went from primary target man to an almost set-up man when Thierry Henry arrived. Rather then see a dip in individual performance, he seemed to thrive even more under the new challenges.

He’s the primary example of a big signing done right. Bergkamp was a big name in the world of football and Rioch paid a big price for him, but it couldn’t have worked out better.

He helped the Gunners to three Premier League titles and three FA Cups, one of which was a double. It was the glory days of Arsenal, where every year seemed to end in some sort of trophy.

All in all, Bergkamp registered 120 goals in 423 appearances, a tally that is somewhat deadened by his transformation to a second striker, where he served as the set-up man to Thierry Henry, a role that he mastered in no time.

Bergkamp has a statue outside of the Emirates for a reason. There are simply none better at what he did.

1. Thierry Henry

There’s no need to be clever with this. When the greatest striker to ever play for Arsenal also happens to be the greatest to ever play in the Premier League, it makes this kind of list very easy.

Nearly every mass scoring record held at Arsenal belongs to the King, and what makes it even more remarkable is he could have played even longer with the Gunners had he not been sold to Barcelona. Yet he was, in a word, unstoppable. He was the King of the Invincibles and the greatest signing Arsene Wenger has ever made.

Anyway, enough of the fluff, lets talk numbers and honors. In 369 career appearances with the Gunners, Henry banged home 226 goals. He was also a regular with assists, as the single season assist record is still held by Henry with 19.

Henry brought home two league titles and two FA Cups with Arsenal, including that brilliant 2003-4 season that will quite simply never be matched again.
