Arsenal is coming off back-to-back resounding victories and now they face relegation-bait Aston Villa. Here’s how they could line up.
After losing to Tottenham, you wouldn’t have been alone in thinking that Arsenal was doomed to dying on a vine and settling into midtable obscurity. But not on Mikel Arteta‘s watch. Rather than wither and die, they showed up in a big way against Premier League Champions Liverpool and then against the reigning champs and second place Machester City.
Neither match was a show of dominance, but what the Gunner showed in both was a tremendous fight and determination that we just haven’t seen in years past. There was grit, there was spirit, there was belief.
And somehow there was also strong defense. Keeping Liverpool and City confined to one total goal is truly a show of defensive magnitude the likes of which many don’t believe exists. Well, it does. And Aston Villa is next up against it.
Liverpool was playing for a 100-point season, City was playing for a berth in the FA Cup finals, but Aston Villa will be playing for their lives. If they win, they can go level on points with Watford, who are currently sitting safely outside the relegation zone.
With Arsenal playing Watford in the last match, the way out for Villa is clear—beat Arsenal, then get a point from West Ham while the Gunners beat Watford. It’s a clear path to staying afloat, and it’s a path that is very, very doable.
Except for the beating Arsenal part.
No, really though, this may just be the toughest of the three matches because chances are, we’re going to take the City/Liverpool role of dominating possession and Villa will take the Arsenal role of scrapping and counterattacking. We’ve seen how effective that underdog role can be first hand and it’s not like we can just not give it to them.
There aren’t any injuries or exclusions to talk about. Eddie Nketiah is back for selection and all that were injured still are. So let’s talk about how the 3-4-3 should look in this one.
Keeper
Emiliano Martinez is the man. Ask no questions.
Centerbacks next.

Centerbacks

Not going to lie, I’m a little perplexed as to what approach Mikel Arteta is going to take here. We just had a hard-fought victory over City on Saturday and now we’re being forced to fend off a relegation-crazed Villa on Tuesday. That has to account for some rotation, but it hasn’t always.

My hesitation begins with the back three. For the sake of just believing that <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"https://fbref.com/en/players/d79a8c87/Rob-Holding?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Rob Holding is due another start, I’ll slot him in on the right side of this back three, with the standard <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"https://fbref.com/en/players/c0e27d1a/David-Luiz?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">David Luiz in the middle, because no one else can play in the middle.

On the left, it feels like <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"https://fbref.com/en/players/3935e52e/Sead-Kolasinac?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Sead Kolasinac has seen himself out of the selection picture, and with <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"https://fbref.com/en/players/fce2302c/Kieran-Tierney?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Kieran Tierney having performed so well in the role against City, I have to believe that he keeps it here. But again, this is where I have hesitation. I don’t know if Arteta sees Tierney as a solution at left centerback, or if it was a one-off against City just so that he didn’t have to play Kolasinac.

We will see, but whatever the back three, Luiz will be in the middle of it all. I think that’s about as sure as I can be.

Wingbacks next.

<a class="next-slide-btn" style="background: #c01f2f" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-slide-shortcode" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"#"> Next: Wingbacks

Wingbacks

Speaking of unsure. With <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"https://fbref.com/en/players/e3a5814e/Ainsley-Maitland-Niles?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Ainsley Maitland-Niles playing left wingback against Manchester City, my perception of what is and isn’t possible at this position flew out the window. And yet it worked out, same as all the other decisions that Arteta made. Go figure.

For this match, though, I feel like we can be pretty confident in what we’re going to see. <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"https://fbref.com/en/players/839c14e1/Cedric-Soares?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Cedric Soares should come back in on the right side. He isn’t available to play in the FA Cup since he already featured for Southampton in the competition.

And seeing as how we’re going to have the majority of possession, <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"https://fbref.com/en/players/bc7dc64d/Bukayo-Saka?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Bukayo Saka will likely get the nod on the left. He was unfortunately wasted at the role against Liverpool, as he was pinned back in defense for the majority of the match.

Getting him some freedom to break out and attack is long overdue and it will likely be on his plate in this one.

Central midfield up next.

Central Midfield

One of the few places that I can safely predict since there are really only three options to fill two positions, and one never changes.

<a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"https://fbref.com/en/players/e61b8aee/Granit-Xhaka?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Granit Xhaka, like David Luiz, will keep his job because no one else can play it. Mikel Arteta has been outspoken in his praise for Xhaka and all he does for this club and as long as that’s the case, and as long as Xhaka doesn’t burn himself out, he will continue to play every single match for the foreseeable future. I’m just fine with that, and so are you.

Next to him, I could see <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"https://fbref.com/en/players/c0617e2b/Dani-Ceballos?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Dani Ceballos getting a breather. He’s been such a huge part of the Gunners recent string of successes, but with the cluster of fixtures, it’s likely that <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"https://fbref.com/en/players/52611641/Lucas-Torreira?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Lucas Torreira will get himself a start here.

Plus, given the nature of the match, one in which we will probably have to defend the counterattack more than we’ll have to worry about establishing a foothold, Torreira is better suited for the match.

A very, very unsure front three next.

<a class="next-slide-btn" style="background: #c01f2f" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-slide-shortcode" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"#"> Next: Front Three

Front Three

I say “unsure” because I honestly have no idea how Arteta will approach filling out the front three. Especially now that Eddie Nketiah is back in the mix after serving the suspension for a red card that Mikel Arteta clearly didn’t agree with. It’s not like he choked a guy out and Arteta will leave him on the bench.

googletag.enableServices();
googletag.display("minutemedia_slideshow_inline_300x250__desktop__tablet");
});

Rather, Arteta will probably want to get Nketiah back in there as soon as he can, and that’s why I’m predicting his return to the starting XI here, even with <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"https://fbref.com/en/players/9dbb75ca/Alexandre-Lacazette?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Alexandre Lacazette in such good form. Rotation isn’t a demotion, it’s a rest.

On the right side, I do believe it’s time to get <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"https://fbref.com/en/players/c5bdb6e3/Reiss-Nelson?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Reiss Nelson back in there. He was instrumental in the victory over Liverpool and that has to earn him a rotational start here.

Lastly, because we have to have one veteran in this attack, <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/07/20/arsenal-aston-villa-predicted-xi/"https://fbref.com/en/players/d5dd5f1f/Pierre-Emerick-Aubameyang?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should keep his spot.
