So when it comes to picking the best goals in Arsenal history, there are so many that we could call upon. Narrowing down a list of 20 goals for a club that has been operating for over a century is nearly an impossible feat. However we can take a look back on the last two decades of Arsenal’s history and reminisce on some of the best times the North London club has ever seen.

The criteria for this list is simple. Each goal will be judged on three categories. Technical skill: judging how skillful the attacking move and the strike were. Historic significance, which will tell us how big of a part it played in Arsenal’s legacy. Finally, level of competition which is self-explanatory. A winner against Manchester United will always be more important than one against Norwich. No offense Canaries. These three areas will be given a value from 1 to 5 and then added together.

Of course we will have quite a few entries with the same numerical value, so the ultimate verdict will be slightly subjective on my part. Also if a goal is a part of a hat trick, that will obviously hold some importance. So let’s get started with number 20.

<a class="location" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-post-shortcode" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2015/12/14/arsenal-20-greatest-goals-last-20-years/3/"#">Next: 20.
20. Kanu vs. Middlesbrough April 24, 1999

Skill: 4- Lets start the list with a throwback from 1999! Nwanko Kanu was one of the most beloved Gunners under Arsene Wenger’s early reign in North London. The Nigerian striker had a great knack for scoring goals and was a lethal super-sub in his pomp. Kanu often came off the bench and provided Wenger with a clever change of pace. We can see here in this goal that Kanu was never at a lack of ideas in front of goal. His cheeky back-heel finish just drips of footballing genius. The nonchalance of the run along with Kanu’s precision and timing, makes this one of Arsenal’s finest flashes of brilliance.

Opponent: 1- Back during the 1998/99 season Middlesbrough was a strong contender in the English top flight. The Boro ended the season in 9th position, two places above Tottenham in fact. However, at the moment of the goal, Middlesbrough don’t really stack up to what we would call lofty competition for the Gunners.

Significance: 2- Arsenal had just claimed the double in the 1997-98, and finished just behind Manchester United as runners up to the title. This goal didn’t really tip the scales in either direction, but it’s definitely fun to watch.

<a class="location" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-post-shortcode" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2015/12/14/arsenal-20-greatest-goals-last-20-years/3/"#">Next: 19.
19. Jack Wilshere Vs. Norwich October 19, 2013

Skill: 5 – This is just one of the best goals you will ever see on a football pitch. I can watch this over and over and over again. I can not get tired of seeing this goal. Just thinking about the timing and precision that it takes to pull something like this off is astounding. This is truly Arsenal at their best, and most unstoppable. Jack Wilshere’s surging run through the middle of the pitch is certainly something that we have missed at the Emirates. This goal is a reminder of just how good the Englishman is when he is fit and able. Giroud’s flicked passes are just gorgeous to look at. When you replay this goal two things come to mind, “I still can’t wait for a healthy Wilshere” and “Olivier Giroud plays, like an elite striker”.

Opponent: 1– I’m sorry, but like I said, Norwich isn’t a team who is going to light a fire in the hearts of gooners. There are no easy games in the Premier League as we learned in our recent fixture against them. But at the end of the day, Norwich was relegated in 2013, and has only just made its way back into the top flight. They simply aren’t that high on the list of Arsenal rivals.

Significance: 2- This goal really is a beautiful work of art. But when you actually stop and consider the play’s significance, it’s difficult to really give it that much credence. When this goal occurred Arsenal were flying high at the top of the league. In the end, however, the team failed to strengthen in the January transfer window and predictable injuries derailed the Gunners once again. We ultimately finished 4th.

<a class="location" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-post-shortcode" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2015/12/14/arsenal-20-greatest-goals-last-20-years/3/"#">Next: 18.
18. Tomas Rosicky vs. Sunderland February 22, 2014

Skill: 5- Once again we are faced with more passing perfection from Arsenal. There is no surprise that at the heart of another scintillating offensive foray, we find Jack Wilshere and Olivier Giroud at the heart of things. Arsenal often find themselves up against stingy defenses, looking to absorb pressure and close down space. When the Gunners find themselves in tight spaces, they have the ingenuity to outmaneuver any opposition.

Opponent: 1- Sunderland were utterly eviscerated by the swiftness of Arsenal’s fluid midfield. Once again, however, the Gunners feasted on a lower level opponent. Sunderland are often fighting for their Premier League lives and don’t embody the type of opponent that Arsenal should consider in their echelon.

Significance: 2- Arsenal displayed some truly wondrous skill during the 2013/14 season. Although it was very significant in many ways, marking a clear shift in the club’s direction, in the end this season just did not live up to expectations.

<a class="location" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-post-shortcode" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2015/12/14/arsenal-20-greatest-goals-last-20-years/3/"#">Next: 17.
17. Aaron Ramsey vs. Galatasaray December 9, 2015

Skill: 5- Aaron Ramsey is not your conventional midfielder. The Welshman’s penchant for scoring goals makes him one of the most dangerous players in the Premier League. You never quite know when or where the Arsenal dynamo will take shot at goal. This was a particularly breath-taking effort. Ramsey hit the ball with perfect balance and timing, catching it on the half volley and rifling the strike into the upper left corner. The Welsh wizard takes far more chances than his conservative teammates, but sometimes they pay off. Against Galatasaray Ramsey was rewarded for his gusto.

Opponent: 2 – As the undisputed kings of Turkey, Galatasaray are certainly not a team you can underestimate or undervalue. The Turkish champs certainly have the pedigree to make any fixture interesting. However at this point in their Champions League campaign, the Gunners had already put away Galatasaray 4-1 at the Emirates. Therefore it was clear that Arsenal would likely make quick work of their group stage adversaries relatively easily.

Significance: 2- At this point Arsenal had already qualified for the round of 16. There was no huge pressure mounting on the squad like the recent drama that played out in Athens. In fact the Gunners fielded a very young team with the likes of Gedion Zelalem and Ainsley Maitland-Niles getting their first senior caps. This was a rare time Arsene Wenger chose to rotate his squad! There was no pressure on this fixture and Arsenal didn’t gain any momentum going into the knockout round because of this win. Despite the lovely score line, Arsenal went on to fall flat against Monaco in the very next round.

<a class="location" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-post-shortcode" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2015/12/14/arsenal-20-greatest-goals-last-20-years/3/"#">Next: 16.
16. Mesut Ozil vs. Napoli October 2, 2013

Skill: 3- Mesut Ozil makes everything look easy. The German ace performs mind-boggling feats of skill with a maddening nonchalance. A side-footed finish is just emblematic of Ozil’s supreme technical ability. Furthermore, we get to see current foundations of the squad begin to make real connections on the pitch. Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey do ever so well in the build-up play leading to the goal. Not in the same league technically as the Wilshere or Rosicky goals, but this was certainly a splendid team move as well.

Opposition: 3- Napoli are a massive European club. They are often at the very top of the Serie A power structure. However I consider Napoli to be the type of club that Arsenal have to feel confident in playing at home in the Champions League. On this occasion the Gunners held their ground with an excellent team display, against a worthy European opponent.

Significance: 3- This game signified a new era for Arsenal football club. This goal marked Mesut Ozil’s first strike as a Gunner. Arsene Wenger broke the bank on Ozil, shelling out £42.5 million to Real Madrid for his services. Ozil was purchased as the piece that would put the Gunners over the top. The German play-maker was acquired for the bright lights of Europe’s biggest stage. This goal marked a tectonic shift in the philosophy of the North London club. With Ozil’s current form it seems that Arsenal are reaping the benefits of their massive investment.

15. Alexis vs. Dortmund November 26, 2014

Skill: 4- Alexis Sanchez is the best striker of the ball currently at Arsenal. Olivier Giroud is certainly not far behind, and I’m sure Aaron Ramsey would like to have a shout as well, but it’s the Chilean who really has a wide array of shots from outside the 16 yard box. This beautiful strike against Dortmund symbolizes everything that we love about Alexis. His form is absolutely perfect. He attacks the opposition with the belief that he is going to score and the courage to take the shot. Beautiful strike.

Opposition: 3- Dortmund is a club that Arsenal seem to always face in the Champions League, so over the years we have fostered somewhat of a rivalry with our German counterparts. Dortmund as a club are very similar to Arsenal, and at the time, speculation over Jurgen Klopp’s future kept matches between the two teams very interesting. There’s no denying that these two clubs have developed somewhat of a rivalry in the past few years.

Significance: 3- This was the game which took all the pressure away from Arsenal’s eventual trip to Turkey. This was the game the Gunners had to have in order to punch their ticket to the round of 16. Considering that this is the type of situation and game where you need your best players to step up, Alexis did that with aplomb. As I mentioned before, Arsenal had now stepped into a new chapter and Alexis’ performance was proof of that. The South American superstar scored a brilliant shot from 20 yards, sending Arsenal into the knockout stages and his name into the history books.

<a class="location" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-post-shortcode" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2015/12/14/arsenal-20-greatest-goals-last-20-years/3/"#">Next: 14.
14. Robert Pires vs Aston Villa March 17, 2002

Skill: 4- Robert Pires was one of the most influential players to ever don an Arsenal shirt. The Frenchman’s smooth gait and effortless ball control made him one of the most enchanting footballers to watch. Pires just seemed to glide across the pitch. This goal is the ideal example of Pires’ ability to ghost in behind defenders and take advantage of one on one opportunities. His impudent chip of Peter Schmeichel is so absolutely Pires’ style. Oh and that diagonal pass by Freddie Ljungberg… sheesh

Opponent: 3- Aston Villa finished 8th at the end of the 2001-02 season. A far cry from the sorry state we find them in at present, but still, even back then they were not at the Gunner’s level.

Significance: 3- This was a hugely successful season for Arsenal. The Gunners claimed their third domestic double, reaching this goal for the second time under Arsene Wenger’s reign as manager. Every victory was important in this season. The Gunners were playing with a new found attacking exuberance brought about by Wenger’s revolutionary tactics. Pires was a huge discovery on Wenger’s part and this goal is the perfect reflection of this season.

<a class="location" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-post-shortcode" href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2015/12/14/arsenal-20-greatest-goals-last-20-years/3/"#">Next: 13.
13. Alexis Sanchez vs. Manchester United October 4, 2015

Skill: 4– In my opinion this ranks up there with any Arsenal team goal ever. You see how almost every player on the pitch can contribute in one splendid play. Bellerin’s speed, Coquelin’s toughness, Ramsey’s aggressiveness, Ozil’s timing and Alexis’ finishing. All came together in one sublime moment of football. For me this has to be Arsenal’s goal of the year so far.

Opponent: 4- Manchester United will always be one of Arsenal’s main opponents. The rivalry which has blossomed between these two clubs is the stuff that legends are genuinely made of. At the moment, United may be stumbling to click into gear, but a win against the Red Devils is always important.

Significance: 3- This 3-0 victory against United was Arsenal’s first victory against the Mancunian giants since May 2011. That alone is reason enough to celebrate this as a famous win for the Gunners. Furthermore, this game kick-started a fantastic run of games for Arsenal this season, proving that this Gunners squad is up to the task of challenging for the title.

Opponent: 1- Villa I’m not trying to be mean, but the Gunners have just ripped you apart in the past. Even though this was Arsenal’s second FA Cup in as many years, further ending the trophy drought, the opposition just was not there. Arsenal ran roughshod all over the Villains.

Significance: 5- Arsenal retained their FA cup title with this and it certainly helps that the Gunners have spent the last two seasons with some silverware to their names. Now the trick is turning consecutive FA Cup wins into bigger silverware.

11. Aaron Ramsey vs. Hull City FA Cup Final 2014

11. Skill: 3- A scrappy, scrappy goal from Arsenal. With their backs against the walls, the Gunners needed to dig deep and find something from nowhere. Clumsy but fortuitous hold up play from Yaya Sanogo and more fantastic link up play from Olivier Giroud set up Aaron Ramsey for a sweet opportunity at glory. The finish itself looks simple enough, but in fact if you look at the speed with which the ball fell to Ramsey, you can see that the Welshman had to strike it perfectly to place it at the near corner.

Opponent: 1- Hull City gave Arsenal fits and they played a very valiant match. However the Tigers haven’t even been able to stay up in the Premiership and now find themselves back down in the Championship. Enough said.

Significance: 7- I know, I know. This is completely breaking the rules that I myself put in place, but I have to do this. Arsenal’s victory at Wembley in 2014 was a huge moment for the club. It signaled the end to a long nine year drought that stretched back to the last time the Gunners won the FA Cup in 2005. This was a huge step toward building as a club. Since this goal, Arsenal have remained on an upward trend. When Arsenal claim a Premier League title sometime soon, we will look back on this goal and say “that’s when it all changed”.

10. Robert Pires vs. Southampton May 7, 2003

Skill: 5- Robert Pires strikes again. This goal is so similar to his entry earlier on this list that it’s scary. Whenever he isolates a defender one on one, Pires is just too good at getting away from his marker. Perhaps the ball did take a helpful deflection, but Pires’ shot was hit to perfection, looping and curling around the keeper. This was probably one of the most memorable hat tricks in Arsenal history

Opponent: 3- Southhampton finished the 2002-03 season in 8th and even at present the Saints are still one of the toughest teams in the Premiership.

Significance: 3- This was another successful season for Arsenal. Although the team failed to win the league, the Gunners did however retain the FA Cup. This type of play was symbolic of the confidence that the whole team was feeling. It’s no wonder that Arsenal went undefeated in the following season.

9. Olivier Giroud vs. Olympiakos December 9, 2015

Skill: 4- This was certainly one of the nicest goals to watch all season. First of all Ozil’s pass to essentially nullify five defenders is jaw-dropping. Ramsey’s pass is perfect and Olivier Giroud has become absolutely prolific with his head. This goal was a sign of what Arsenal are capable of at any given moment. This first goal got the burly Frenchman going, and he rode this momentum all the way to an outstanding maiden hat trick for Arsenal.

Opponenet: 3- The defending Greek champions put up quite the fight against the Gunners in London. We clearly walked into that game unprepared and ill-equipped. Coming into the match, Olympiakos had a perfect record at home against the Gunners. However this time Arsenal were able to get the job done in Athens.

Significance: 4- There’s no point in beating a dead horse. We all know how important this is for the club. This will be the 16th consecutive year that Arsenal have made it to the knockout round and that’s certainly quite the accomplishment. However, it is time to improve even more in Europe. The competition has been overly complicated so far if you ask me. Now that Arsenal have made it through, its time to see them make something of the opportunity.

8. Dennis Bergkamp vs. Leicester August 27, 1997

Skill: 5- This is an all time great goal, by an absolute legend. Bergkamp’s composure in this goal is exactly what made him one of Arsenal’s greatest players ever. His ability to smoothly bring down David Platt’s long ball with such grace is out of this world. Without missing a beat or wasting a motion, Bergkamp dances around defender Matt Elliot and calmly slots home for a classy hat trick.

Opponent: 3- Leicester finished the 1997-98 season 10th in the league. The foxes also put up a strong showing against Arsenal, playing the Gunners to a draw despite Bergkamp’s heroics.

Significance: 4- Although this game was still quite early in the season, that didn’t change the fact that the Gunners were already playing at a very high level. The North Londoners went on to win the second double in the club’s history and the first under new boss Arsene Wenger. This was only Wenger’s second season in charge.

7. Nwankwo Kanu vs. Chelsea October 23, 1999

Skill: 4- On October 23, 1999 Nwankwo Kanu iced Chelsea with one of the most historic hat tricks at Stamford Bridge. All three goals showed a different aspect of the lanky Nigerian’s game, but it was his third and final goal that stole the show. After closing down a Chelsea defender, Kanu swash-buckles into the penalty area . With a fake on the keeper the striker gets an opportunity to fire on goal. His shot swerves in at a nearly impossible angle. Just incredible

Opponent: 5- A win against Chelsea is always massive. A hat trick at Stamford Bridge is a dream come true. Every Gooner should know and love this goal.

Significance: 3- Arsenal failed to win the league in 1999 and finished well behind Manchester United in second place. But the three points in this victory helped to put an eight point gap between the two clubs. Arsenal finished second that year while Chelsea dropped down to fifth.

6. Sylvain Wiltord vs. Manchester United May 8, 2002

Skill: 2- Sylvain Wiltord’s name is forever etched into Arsenal lore. He may not have been the most technically adroit player to ever play at Highbury, but he was extremely reliable in big moments. Just for being in the right place at the right time, Wiltord get’s credit on my part. The goal looks easy but it was at slightly tight angle. Also, the good solo work of Freddie Ljungberg to set it up makes this a fun goal to watch over and over.

Opponent: 5- This season was another one of Arsenal’s great battles with the Red Devils. Thanks to this goal, they narrowly missed the league title and fell to second underneath the Gunners.

Significance: 5- Scoring against Manchester United, at Old Trafford to win the league and seal the double. “We won the league at Old Trafford”, enough said.

Bonus: Wiltord had a knack for scoring big goals against United. In the following season Arsenal failed to retain their Premiership crown, but did however hold onto their FA Cup silverware. Thanks in large part to <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2015/12/14/arsenal-20-greatest-goals-last-20-years/3/"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzmyvsznk2U%22 target="_blank">this slick goal from Sylvain Wiltord once again on away soil.

5. Marc Overmars vs United March 14 1998

Skill: 3- Another goal that exemplified the qualities of Arsenal’s revolutionary attacking style. It’s interesting to note that many of the goals by Arsenal from this era begin with long balls over the top, especially diagonal balls that switch the field of play. Overmars’ ability to the head the ball down in front of him and then maintain the composure necessary to slot pass the keeper is pure class.

Opponent: 5- Beating United just never gets old.

Significance: 5- At this point in the season United were nine points clear of the Gunners at the top of the table. Although the North Londoners had three games in hand, there was still plenty to do in order to claim a title. This goal from Overmars lives long in the minds of Gooners everywhere. It ignited the title push and helped Arsene Wenger claim his first Premier League trophy.

4. Dennis Bergkamp vs. Newcastle March 2, 2002

Skill: 5- Another ridiculous goal from Arsenal’s Dutch legend. This goal just oozes with class from start to finish. Vieira’s tackle to win the ball back deep in his own half and Pires’ incisive ball into the Newcastle penalty area are just wonders to behold. The build up play, however, pales in comparison to the deftness of the finish. Once again we see Bergkamp’s uncanny ability to sidestep defenders with the utmost skill and creativity. The Dutchman’s close control is scintillating, but it’s his little push off that truly seals this as of the best all around goals in Arsenal history.

Opponent: 3- Although Newcastle may be battling relegation in the today’ Premier League, the Magpies weren’t always so hilariously inept. During the 2001-02 season, Newcastle were serious contenders and found themselves right in the heat of the title hunt. Newcastle ultimately finished fourth, proving that this classy performance and clean sheet against them was truly an impressive victory for the Gunners at the time.

Significance: 5- This goal effectively dealt the knock out blow to Newcastle’s title hopes and Arsenal went on to claim the double in this season. This may not have clinched the title but it certainly stands out as one of the most exciting goals of a very exciting season.

3. Thierry Henry Vs. Tottenham April 22, 2006

Skill: 4- I know it has taken a while but there were so many goals to get to! Thierry Henry is about to dominate these last few entries, so no worries are necessary. This was just a flash of Henry’s brilliance. A very strong run from Emmanuel Adebayor set up the French legend for a crucial goal against Arsenal’s bitter rivals. The control and placement of the strike are so lightning fast. The defender and goalie have no time to react. Simply too good from Henry.

Opponent: 5- Losing to Tottenham is simply unacceptable. Luckily that was narrowly avoided on this day in 2006.

Significance: 4- This was a rather important game. Although Arsenal didn’t win any trophies in this season, ensuring that the gap between them and their North London rivals was very important. Tottenham would finish just two points behind Arsenal in 5th, highlighting the importance of this draw. Furthermore it would also be the final goal that Thierry Henry would score in a North London derby.

Opponent: 5– Manchester United went on to win the title over Arsenal, finishing ten points better than the Gunners. During this era of the Premier League, these were really the only two teams, plus Liverpool, worth talking about.
