Arsenal face Benfica in the second leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie on Thursday in what is without doubt the biggest game of their season so far. Here is the predicted lineup.
How does Mikel Arteta go for this one? That is the million pound question.
Leaving Rome full of disappointment after a series of missed opportunities could only muster a 1-1 draw in the first leg, now the dust has settled the scoreline isn’t as detrimental as initially thought. The tie could easily be out of sight for the Portuguese outfit if the Gunners weren’t so wasteful, but a score draw away from home in European competition is never a bad result, per se.
What it does mean is that the progression for either side is finely balanced, and that the onus is on Benfica to be more adventurous than at Stadio Olimpico.
Jorge Jesus has big decisions on his hands regarding whether to stick with three central defenders or revert to his favoured 4-4-2 diamond. Arteta admitted he doesn’t know what his opposite number will plump for, thus his lineup will be made on who he thinks can produce the best result.

Arsenal predicted lineup vs Benfica in the Europa League round of 32 second leg clash on Thursday: Will Nicolas Pepe and Thomas Partey return?
In central midfield the return of Thomas Partey is most welcome. Dubbed as ‘very close’ to returning, late fitness tests will determine if he is available to start. Meanwhile, Rob Holding will miss out as a precautionary measure after suffering concussion against Manchester City. He’ll be back for Leicester on the weekend.
Up front it will be intriguing to see whether Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang retains his place and Emile Smith Rowe returns to the left wing, while there is a decision to be made at full-back following two consecutive 90-minute outings for Hector Bellerin, as well as Kieran Tierney’s return.
Insisting he will set his side up to win the game as opposed to holding out for a stalemate and looking to sneak through on away goals – that was never going to happen anyway – the intent from the off will be similar to how it was in the first leg and ideally nothing like the opening period against Manchester City. Please not that again.
Who will Arteta go for? Onto the predicted lineup.

Goalkeeper & Defenders
Bernd Leno (GK) – The German’s distribution has been gradually improving over the course of the season, a vital trait to complement his exceptional focus and shot-stopping ability. Even from crosses he looks more comfortable, so we’ll pray his howler against Wolves was his ‘one for the season’. He starts, of course.
Hector Bellerin (RB) – It’s a lot to ask of Bellerin to play three full 90-minute matches in the space of a week, but with Tierney a risk to gamble playing after a lengthy spell out, he may have no choice. Bellerin was exceedingly poor against City but excellent in the first leg, where Benfica’s lack of advanced wing-backs presented him with the space to link up with Bukayo Saka. More of that would be welcome.
David Luiz (CB) – Even if Holding weren’t absent for this one, David Luiz would still come back in. It wasn’t used to the best effect in Rome, but his long-ball distribution is a valuable asset against Benfica’s slow central defenders. As someone who can open the game up by carrying the ball better than Holding, he’s sure to start.
Gabriel Magalhaes (CB) – There has been a difference of opinion on Pablo Mari’s display last time out, some praising his return to the side and others noticing the lack of match sharpness hindered him greatly. All of that is irrelevant though, as Gabriel will come back in. He’s finding form again after his illness.
Cedric Soares (LB) – Tierney probably didn’t expect to play the full 90 minutes against the Citizens, a decision that hints to him coming back in for the Leicester clash following Thursday. A natural left footer would be nice on that flank, but Arteta may compensate for that further up the pitch.

<h2>Midfielders</h2>
<p><strong>Thomas Partey (CM) –</strong> It’s telling of the circumstances where most supporters don’t want to see Partey start in Athens. Rushing him back from injury has been detrimental to his season, one he’s yet to have three consecutive 90 minutes in, but the fact that his initial absence was listed as 10-12 days (it’ll be 17 days since Villa on Thursday) and he was an outside chance for the City game hints that <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/02/24/arsenal-predicted-lineup-vs-benfica-2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/02/24/arsenal-huge-partey-injury-benfica/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arsenal have had this decision ‘well’ planned</a>.</p>
<p>He may get 60 or so minutes and come off for Dani Ceballos, by which time the Gunners wouldn’t mind having the tie sewn up. Risky? Perhaps. Likely? I think so.</p>
<p><strong>Granit Xhaka (CM) –</strong> He will never get a rest, Arsenal simply can’t afford it. Only Saka has played more minutes than the Swiss, who if were to fall foul to injury may was well result in Arsenal throwing in the towel. That is hyperbole, yes, but there is not a person in north London who doesn’t tremble at the thought of Mohamed Elneny playing week in, week out in his stead.</p>
<p>Even the anti-Xhaka brigade, who have their reasons, of course, must admit without him Arsenal are up the proverbial creek without a paddle. He starts on Thursday. He has to.</p>
<p><strong>Emile Smith Rowe (AM) –</strong> Martin Odegaard was very, very poor against City. The excuse of him not receiving the ball enough from the back, namely Elneny, is valid, but whenever he had possession or found himself in dangerous areas, he fluffed his lines.</p>
<p>That isn’t the reason Arteta will leave him out of the side, it will instead be rotation. Odegaard has played just 640 minutes of football all season – and just 278 since late November – which will have contributed to his performance on Sunday. Smith Rowe had a (small) rest and will play in his favoured position.</p>

<h2>Forwards</h2>
<p><strong>Bukayo Saka (RW) –</strong> Primed and ready to play his 10,000th full 90 this season, Mr. Reliable and <em>Mr. The Best Player in the Team</em> is a given to start. Will he ever get a rest? At 19 he’s full of youthful exuberance that is seeing him through each week untroubled. While the fear of burnout rings alarm bells in the back of the mind, he isn’t showing any sings of slowing down.</p>
<p>Furthermore, Arsenal aren’t much without him. The biggest game of the season needs the best player of the season…*ahem*… the best player.</p>
<p><strong>Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (ST) –</strong> No Alexandre Lacazette for this one. Arteta felt City were there for the taking and opted to play the captain, a ploy that didn’t work. Even if Aubameyang played the entire match with minimal impact, his movement made Arsenal’s best chances in the first leg so he will return.</p>
<p>Even if he missed one sitter and saw two others go begging, as soon as he came off in Rome Arsenal created nothing. His ability to create chances is perhaps even better than his ability to finish them. He’ll play.</p>
<p><strong>Nicolas Pepe (LW) –</strong> The major change of the team could see Odegaard dropping out for the aforementioned reasons. In his pre-match press conference <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/02/24/arsenal-predicted-lineup-vs-benfica-2/"https://www.football.london/arsenal-fc/news/every-word-granit-xhaka-just-19903050" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arteta spoke of Nicolas Pepe in glowing terms</a>, adding that he likes what he can bring to the left flank.</p>

<p>Arsenal were too cautious in the first leg and needed another forward in the side. Pepe came on and was immediately direct with his running and aggressive with his dribbling, a trait that will be key to a lightening start in Athens. Starting games much stronger than he has previously, the Ivorian’s pace will aid Arsenal’s intentions of going for the jugular early doors.</p><!—pageview_candidate—>">
