How Bukayo Saka is Helping Granit Xhaka Sing
The deployment of star boy Bukayo Saka at right wing along with the emergence of Emile Smith Rowe has been somewhat transformational on this Arsenal team. In this case, it’s specifically Saka’s move to the right-hand side that is key. Throughout the season Gunners’ fans have bemoaned the imbalance in the side, complaining about Arsenal’s propensity to attack exclusively down the left-hand side.
Now, with Saka playing at right-wing and either Gabriel Martinelli or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, both of whom naturally look to drive into central areas, playing left wing, Arsenal’s entire left side is finally living up to its true potential.
Xhaka finds himself in areas that are far less congested, and it becomes simpler for him to find viable passing lanes to a very in-form Kieran Tierney. Now that opposing defenses aren’t penned in tracking Saka, there is far more acreage for both players to function. This new freedom was perfectly displayed in Xhaka’s key pass to Tierney against Chelsea which set up the opening penalty and the pre-assist against Newcastle in the FA Cup to seal the deal.
Xhaka is a player who relies on time and space to play his game. Unlike Partey, the Swiss is not what you would call press resistant, so the new pockets of space left behind after Saka’s shift to the right has truly unlocked Granit in many ways.
Yes, Xhaka can dig himself into holes that often require world-class free-kicks to get out of, but at the moment his upturn in form is not simply down to force of personality, but a growing balance and synchronicity throughout Arteta’s entire starting XI.

<p>Whether you choose to love or hate Xhaka, one fact that simply can not be denied is that until the club brings in a worthy replacement in the Swiss midfielder’s position, he will be a vital cog in whatever success Arsenal attain.</p>
<p>Perhaps the most baffling aspect of the Xhaka enigma is the fact that he simply gets better in the face of major adversity. It’s as though when the criticism and vitriol around the player hits fever pitch, that’s exactly when fans see the very best out of him.</p>
<p>Xhaka is a player and a man who thrives off of the opportunity to prove doubters wrong and responds somewhat positively, or perhaps vengefully, in the face of hardship.</p>
<p>In most normal situations this would be an admirable, even desirable, trait. However, most Arsenal supporters will agree that the adversity Xhaka often overcomes is of his own making.</p>
<p>We can all recall the nadir of his Arsenal career to date. The dark scenes of walking off to boos and jeers from his own fans – giving back the venom he was receiving, mind you – don’t need to be revised. To his credit, Xhaka returned after the episode <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/01/14/arsenal-xhaka-enjoy-real-estate-midfield/2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/01/12/arsenal-vs-crystal-palace-preview-team/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">against Crystal Palace</a> and won back most supporters with his talking on the pitch. However, this season once again so a head-in-hands moment for Xhaka when <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/01/14/arsenal-xhaka-enjoy-real-estate-midfield/2/"https://paininthearsenal.com/2020/12/14/granit-xhaka-boy-cried-arsenal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he allowed emotions to get the better of him</a> once again in a clash against Burnley this season.</p>
<p>After serving his three-game suspension for raising his hands to the neck area of Burnley’s <a href=https://paininthearsenal.com/2021/01/14/arsenal-xhaka-enjoy-real-estate-midfield/2/"https://fbref.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=495945ef,ef0bcd17&search=Ashley+Westwood&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Ashley Westwood</a>, Xhaka did what he has customarily done throughout his Arsenal career; thrive off adversity. In the four games since his return, the Swiss international has been essentially faultless, but this time around it isn’t simply because of his character, but because of a new tactical shift that has truly unlocked him.</p>
